To gasket or not to gasket?

Seems Bub91 has blown the drivers side exhaust manifold gasket,

    the question is-

    do I

    A- replace the gasket
    B- use silicone
C- use silcone AND the gasket
D- just bolt up metal to metal.

( D has been reccommended by a couple of reputable sources)

silicone has some good points but it also has weak points such as only handling 18psi max. now you may say, **** i dont have that much back pressure, and most of the time you dont BUT there are times when you do and it appears to lose the ability to hold that 18 psi the older it gets in my experience.

me i must be old world cause i have always found a GOOD quality gasket and maniseal the best if the either of the mating surfaces isnt to well.

being a fitter by trade i like things to come undone next time i have to do the job so i often use copper based antiseize on the gasket if the mating surfaces are in real good nick, works a treat and ensures it all comes apart nicely as well.

    8) well pedro, mine pooped the manifold gaskets and the engine pipe ones also,i refitted gaskets and red high temp silicone.
i was advised by ricks four wheel drive [they're in nerang, lr experts] to ditch the tab washers and fit spring washers to the bolts.
now and then i have had to re torque the bolts, but the gaskets are holding out well.

destroyed the heat shield getting it off,,

maybe a good time to wrap the exhaust huh Inc!

only supposed to be 15 lbs on the bolts,,,
its been a while since I've had to guess 15lbs :?

    Gasket...

If it were me, I'd replace the gasket. Also, try & use a genuine part for this. I've used pattern parts for this before and blown it to pieces within weeks... Genuine Parts zorst gaskets last much better.

Used C when sealing the manifolds to the block on Hellspawn and they haven't leaked so far. That was 2½yrs back and ? many kms. The odometer just tells me that it's oil change time otherwise pay no attention to it so it's probably done 40k ? and some of that was rough stuff.

D sounds an interesting option. Might work if both faces are square, only a matter of time til they're not so it'd be back to leaking again.

Maniseal is okay however find it gets brittle after a while, so it only takes one well aimed stick to hit the joint and bits of that exhaust cement break off. So it's back to leaking again. I'm trialing silicone to see if it's more resistant to impacts and sealing, certainly more flexible than the Maniseal cement.

Just my 5 cents worth ( used to be 2c but with inflation, work care etc)

Take care fitting the manifold gaskets, making sure you have them the right way around. they look like they will fit both ways, but if put on the wrong way around you won't get a perfect seal on the exhaust ports and they will blow later. Before fitting them , have a look whilst the exhaust manifold is off, offer the gaskets to the head and check the port seal of both faces of the gasket. You will soon see the difference. Many make this mistake when fitting them with out checking, as when tightened they look right, but blow later as there isn't enough gasket material covering the port hole perimeter

Further to my earlier post, this site has pictures and explains that 40 % of power can be lost due to fitting these gaskets wrong.

8O 40% ! Bit much to swallow I think, expect to lose some power 10~15%by a leaking exhaust gasket but not as in the equivalent of 3 downed cylinders.
