    Camshaft gear bolt. can't undo.

I'm trying to replace the timing gears and chain on my v8.

The camshaft bolt (the one that holds the distributor drive gear and timing gear to the shaft) does not want to budge.

I not 100% sure what size the head is. my 19mm spanner and sockets feel a bit loose. 3/4 af is no better.

Anyone know the correct head size and a neat trick to getting the bolt to loosen?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Try using a 6 sided impact socket, preferably on the end of an impact driver, if you're not keeping the timing gears jamb them either through a hole in the cam sprocket or jamb something in the gear and chain teeth. Or find a way of holding the crank still, give the breaker bar (not a ratchet) a sharp whack in the correct direction and it should break the seal, then use the ratchet, Regards frank.

    Thanks

    Thanks Frank

    I'll get a 6 sided socket.

Can anyone recommend the best size? Both 19mm an 3/4 af seem a bit loose.

Sorry I cant remember what size the head of the bolt is, have you tried an 18mm socket. Try your 3/4, 19mm on a known bolt head of that size, head bolts are usually 19mm or 3/4" and see how your sockets fit them. Also check that the hex on the cam bolt is in good condition, it may have rounded edges, good luck, Regards Frank.
