I've had a good search around and I can't find a list of what I need to check over before registering a vehicle from interstate in NSW.
All the gov website gives is process and seems to assume you are going to just take it to a place, let if pass or fail and then pay someone to do it.
So, anyone have info or pointers in the right direction, we will have a diversity of vehicles, some of which are definitely coming, one may not:
- Suzuki Jimny 2008, bought from new, Bullbar added, rear seats and belts removed.
- D1 300TDi 1995, Bullbar, snorkel, suspension lift (2" probably), 265x75x16 tyres
- D2 TD5 2003, Bullbar, snorkel, roof rails, rear light, uhf, suspension lift on front (40mm ish, OME), air bag spacers on rear
We will be in the ACT area, so interested in any places that way to deal with.
Thanks!

You have a grace period in which to transfer the rego so it would be possible to have the vehicles assessed by a mechanic without surrendering the SA rego and do any repairs / alterations yourself.
I have used Langes Auto centre Yass road Queanbeyan 02 62976969 for rego inspetions over the years and have found them fair and professional. They can do pink (roadworthy) and Blue( proof of Identy) checks as well as LPG inspections.
Rego in the ACT is much more difficult with the inspection being done by a government office who are not particularly effcient and can be pedantic over small points so its best not to live in the ACT......

The proceedure is;
Go to the RTA/RMS, do all the paper work to transfer the rego and they will nominate where you take the car to be inspected, once it's looked at, and has passed, you take it all back to the RMS and get your plates for rego, if it fails they will tell you what needs to be fixed, this is for all interstate vehicles, even if it comes with that states roadworthy cert.

That's a different process to the one that I have gone through for two vehicles that I have registered from interstate.
The first was driven from Vic on an unreg permit. Blue slip obtained, took vehicle with proof of ownership and CTP to RMS paid money and walked out with NSW plates.
The second was a vehicle currently registered in QLD, I got a blue slip, CTP and took it to RMS at my leisure a few weeks later with proof of ownership and walked out with plates ( significantly poorer)
Maybe RMS has different processes in Sydney, I wanted to register a new trailer on the Central coast and they wanted a slip from a registered weighbridge as well as the blue slip, ended up towing it home on a permit and registered it locally without the requirement for the additional weighbridge ticket, the nearest registered weighbridge to yass is over 100KM away.

A blue slip and application for rego is all you need have done 2 in last 12 months don't worry about the old rego once you have the blue slip. Just tell RMS old plates returned that's all they asked. I would do as tote says drive on old rego and get blue sip done and do any repairs your self then get new rego in NSW not ACT. When they blue slip the jimny they may down grade seating or ask you to replace it![]()
The process is fairly straightforward, it's what actually has to be checked I am after. You only get 2 weeks to represent the vehicle otherwise it's a retest.
When we relocate I could be very busy at first, so if I can get a bunch of stuff out of the way early it would be better.
I wondered about the Jimmy, you would think that less seats would be no issue..
Still got them all, but been in the roof a few years...
You don't have a choice of ACT or nsw do you? It's all down to home address?

No, there is no choice of state, I wasn't sure whether you had somewhere to live yet or not....
You should be able to go and ask a mechanic to do a check without commencing a certificate if the vehicle is currently registered elsewhere.
I would be approaching a registered inspection station like the one mentioned above and getting them to assess the vehicle to see how much work may need to be done. If it roadworthy it should be a simple process to get a blue slip. Seats may be needed to be refitted for the check. Unlike other states the annual roadworthy in NSW does not require a visit to a government authority or any engineering provided that the vehicle is not already engineered in which case you existing engineering certificate should be good enough with a blue slip.
The actual check is based on the mechanic's opinion of the car. they only get paid $50.00 or so for a blue slip so it's not going to be a 4 hour ordeal. If the vehicle's lights, and electricals work, the tyres have good tread and the car passes the brake application test (which it will unless it only has 2 wheel brakes ) all will be good. On my Falcon BF ute the inspection consisted of Tyres, Lights overview of the engine bay, jack up the front wheels and check the ballljoints and wheel bearings ( Falcon wear items), Gas inspection, confirmation of chassis number then off to the magic RMS web site to confirm that the vehicle engine and chassis number are not flagged and in 15 minutes it was all done. I imagine that if I had presented with a GQ patrol with a 6" lift and a home made bull bar the process may not have been so easy.....

Now if the vehicle was being registered in, say Port Lincoln, you would just have to show up at the cop shop and have them check the engine number is correct.
To do that it has to be registered in the name of a resident in that district though.
