Which is exactly how I feel about it too.....

I don't think facing forward or backwards will have much effect, as the required amount of air has to be drawn in either way, but having a snorkle will greatly reduce the dust intake for the vehicle. The lower to the groung, the thicker the dust. The extra hight is a great advantage.

Out around Alice Springs, we don't generally have alot of water crossings (infact we don't have alot of water!), but snorkles are almost a standard item on 4wd's for reducing dust intake.

I would have thought the Defenders air intake on the outside of the guard would have been pretty good for sucking clean air?

Does it suck dust up from the front wheel?

I'll have a look around at the 4wd show this weekend.

Ever seen the dust shadow down the side of your car after driving on a dirt road for a while when it is real clean to start with  a Defenders intake is perfectly positioned to suck most of it in 8O

Looks like I need a snorkel then
Capt,

If you havent picked it up yet (the car that is) try the price from the dealer, last I heard they were safari units with LR badges on them at a considerably cheaper price 8O

I dont think you will ever completly eliminate dust, but there are steps towards reducing it. A snorkel, i feel, is a good step. A pre-filter, like what is fitted to tractor intakes are very good, and of course sensible driving, if you drive up someones arse on a dirt road you deserve to get a filter full of dust. Matt

I've driven on some trails where the visibilty is reduced to zero quite some time after the vehicle in front has been through...that is geology

Then it depends on the prevaling breeze... that is meterology

    Gentlemen check your filters.

Does the same apply to Series I Disco's, or arent they available from LR anymore? Matt

I've already asked after Walker suggested it, but unfortunately they only have a listing for S2 Disco's and Defenders. Pity because they are about $150 cheaper than at the 4x4 shops. And they have Land Rover instead of Safari moulded on them.

I am gunna see what I can squeeze the price when I get my B Bar and other bits and pieces, dont want it fitted, just supply and will fit myself, aint gunna get some shonk drillin holes and not sealing properly etc on my car, this way if I fit most everything myself (maxi drives excluded) I know what to do if it goes wrong and who's bum to start kicking

Hi seqifisho, if my memory serves me correctly, someone did a snorkel thread in the tech section saying he picked one up for around $300 and fitted it himself. Stuffed if i can remember who it was. Matt

    Hi Ace,

I put the ones on my Fenders, and I've seen some of them 4x4 shop fitters doin there stuff 8O so they wont be goin no where near mine 8O

About the only stuff that I will get fitted is the maxi drive gear from Mal and maybe the front bar as its a bit hard to carry home, although I usually go over everything and check out what sort of job has been done, even when I get mechanical repairs etc, my missus reckons Im fussy and doesnt understand why I can spend an hour under the car just looking

My philosophy is just like Don Chipps, keep the bastards honest!!!!

    Regards Glen.
