    I always thought the it was as follows

    1st Generation... "Classic" 1970-1994

    2nd Generation... "P38" 1994-2002

    3rd Generation... 2002----???

    1981 First luxury edition, called Range Rover In Vogue.

    1982 Automatic transmission option introduced. The Range Rover's 10th Anniversary year and the year the 100,000th Range Rover was built.

    1983* When the Government raised the tariff on parts, assembly in Australia was discontinued. Five-speed manual gearbox replaces four-speed.

    1984 First regular-production luxury model, called Range Rover Vogue.

    1985* In May 1985 Range Rover sales in Australia exceeded those in England. The luxury Vogue model introduced in Australia. Fuel-injected V8 introduced for top models. New four-speed automatic gearbox.

    1986* The year unleaded petrol was introduced to Australia -significant modifications to the Range Rover. They incorporated fuel injection - raising output from 92.6 to 110.2 kW; four-speed ZF automatic, with lockable torque converter; suspension was lowered 38.5 mm, dual rated springs and larger front suspension bushes fitted.

    1987 Range Rover launched in USA.

    1988 New top luxury model, called Range Rover Vogue SE.
    Last carburettor V8 models built.

    1989* Luxuriously equipped Vogue SE arrives in Australia. Diesel Range Rover dropped from the Australian range.Bigger engines: 3.9-litre V8 and 2.5-litre turbodiesel. ABS available.

    1990* 3.9 litre engine was introduced into Australia.
    Solihull's 250,000th Range Rover produced. Anti-roll suspension available.

    1991* The year JRA lost Range Rover distribution to the newly formed Rover Australia.

    1992 Long-wheelbase Vogue LSE becomes top model, with 4.2-litre V8 engine. Air suspension introduced. New 2.5-litre direct-injection turbodiesel engine.

    1993* New model - Vogue Plus - introduced in Australia fitted with EAS and ABS. Standard Range Rover deleted from range.

    1994 Second-generation model announced - the first all-new Range Rover in almost 25 years, with 4.6-litre or 4.0-litre V8 engines; longer wheelbase of Vogue LSE, air suspension, ABS and airbags all standard. Twin airbags standardised.
    Final two-door models built.

    1996 Final first-generation Range Rover built.

    1997* In May Luxury Limited Edition Range Rover "Autobiography" launched in Australia.
    In October Entry level Range Rover 4.0 Litre launched in Australia.

    2000* In February Range Rover 4.0 Litre S introduced in Australia.
    In July Range Rover "Vogue" 30th Anniversary Limited Edition celebrates three decades of the world's leading luxury 4x4.
