    D1 brake lights not working

Hey all, out of town and someone pointed out my brake lights aren't working. All 3 don't work. 2 on the body plus 1 at the top of the rear window. Checked fuse and that's ok, plus it's the same fuse as the indicators which are working.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks.

Most likely the brake light switch. Had to do mine a while ago.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

    Hi Judo

It sounds like your brake light switch has failed, there are two types of brakes switches for the D1 and both types fail too often.

The ABS model D1 has a brake light switch with two sets of contacts and the standard braking system model D1 has one set of contacts, these switches have a dedicated hole / position for each type on the metal bracket that supports them ( two holes available and each switch type will only fit into their correct shaped hole ).

To replace the ABS switch, there is a locking ring on the plunger side, this must be pushed home towards the body of the brake light switch after the switch has been installed.
The plunger is to remain lengthened until the switch is installed, the return of the brake pedal forces the plunger past a internal ratchet where it stops at the correct position for the length of the plunger.

Make yourself up a piece of timber 60 Cm long for a prop to hold your pedal down while you work, jamb it between the end of the drivers seat and the pedal lever, mind you don't damage the upholstery on the seat and couple of folds of rag on that end of your prop should suffice.

They do all blow at the same time. Check the top one first as the others are a pain to get to, particularly the right one. Otherwise, it's the brake switch.

I would rephrase this and say they "can" all blow at the same time, but it is not common.

My money is on the switch.

This one is for the non-ABS or standard braking system.

Thanks all. Confirmed it's the switch which I didn't think about at all initially, so you have made fault finding almost instantaneous. Managed to break the switch apart, clean the contacts and superglue it back together in working order. Tomorrow we find out how long that lasts while driving. About an hour to the nearest store in Geelong area where I should be able to get a replacement on the way home.

    Cheers.
