Cannot help with your problem but I had a 93 Disco from new and it didn't have a cat converter though in some overseas markets they may have.

I have had my current 94 Disco from new and it doesn't have a cat converter even though it is listed in the handbook service schedule (renew every 160K). My car still has its original exhaust and I just had a look under it to double check - so I definitely know it hasn't got one.

I smell a RAT... I may be completely wrong but $2500 sounds out of control.

I changed the Mass air meter of my Disco2 a few months ago - it cost about $500 bucks.

Sounds like you need to find a Landy specialist that has the equipment and knowhow to KNOW what your issue is. ( That doesn't mean a dealer) I'm sure one of the WA guys must be able to put you onto someone good.

You'll see a forum area that lists recommended suppliers - Are you near Wangarra?...if so Discovery automotive are mentioned there.

I'm in Melbourne - but sure one of the WA crew will help you.

Australian ser1 Discos do not have cats or lambas. Can you describe more accuratly what it is doing, A crook airflow meter normally makes them go rich constantly and will give an error code. Exchange units are around $500 from places like petroject etc. These engine do suffer from cam wear around 200k if they have not had regular oil changes but the problem will be constant. running rough and stalling when hot is normally the ignition amp.

Errr.... IIRC, the '93 Disco doesn't have any form of ECU :!: Someone's having a larf at your expense...

If it's running like a dog, there's a few things you could look at:

Air hoses - Older hoses have a tendancy to start collapsing.
Intercooler - Is it full of crud?
Turbo - Is it working properly?
Fuel pump - Has the mechanism seized?

To help diagnose further, can you give some examples/scenarios to describe the "Running like a dog"?

A friend had the same symptoms on his 1993 Disco. He replaced the ignition leads and spark plugs and the problem went away. Even the auto elec / mechanic who fixed it was surprised at how pronounced the change was.

Try that before spending the big $$$$, because you'll end up having to get new leads and plugs anyway.

To be safe, try replacing the coil, leads, plugs, air filter, fuel filter, distributor cap. Easy done, DIY job that may cure your problem in 1 easy hour.

No carby v8 discos were sold in Australia they are all fitted with 14cux injection but with out cats and lambdas. Carby ones don't meet your emmision laws.

Thanks for the quick response, will try the suggestions you have made here. I've had the beast down to Discovery Automotive in Wangara but they had no luck ! typical, the problem comes and goes but when it comes to looking at it they is no fault !

I have been messing this morning with it again and it appears that No 4 pot HT lead is breaking down so will do as Micheal2 suggests and go for the cheap option of leads. The car has just been for service but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I work in Africa so they have probably ripped off the missus as mechanics would want to do.

I was going to say not to go near any place in Wangara as they'd find something to stitch you up for.
Try Russel Booth at ARB Collongwood St, Osborne Park 9244 3553.
Guest and Puddey in West Perth. Troone St I think.
Or Kevin Falconbridge at RoverTech in John St.Bentley.

My first choice would be Russel as he's done up heaps of Landies and is very good for advice.
What he doesn't know probably no one else does either.
