Sure its not big end bearings or balancer , how many k's on the clock ?

Hi Everyone,
My 300tdi Defender has a noticeable 'knock' at idle and low rpm. It is quite pronounced when cold, and improves when the D'Fer is up to running temperature.
Using a screwdriver as a stethoscope has shed no light. It doesn't appear to be related to the injectors or a particular cylinder. It knocks at about 4 beats per second around the top front of the engine.
Apart from this sound, the engine is perfect. No smoke (apart from the usual puff on start up) and it revs smoothly and powerfully across the rev range. The knock is less pronounced as the revs rise and disappears once you pass about 1600 rpm.
Vales clearances have been adjusted. Timing has been checked by a reputable LR specialist.
Swapping the injectors between the two vehicles yielded an instant, but short term improvement. While less pronounced, the knock is still there. I've tried all the solutions suggested by the "Google Dr" and on "You Tube", but am still at a loss.
I'm working on the theory that this is diesel knock caused by the injection pump timing being either advanced or retarded.
I've seen that when the timing pin is in place, there is a tiny bit of movement.
Is it possible that my timing is still a smidge in the wrong direction? What would be the impact if I time the engine by 'ear'? I used to do this on my old G60 Patrol (petrol).
And before you go there, yes I know you can't do this with the engine running!
Thanks,
Mathew

Sounds very much like Big Ends to me , sorry to say
Quietens up when oil pressure builds a tad
Hope not ,but my v8 petrol cruiser did the same
Cheers Sumo
check the vacuum pump, a washer drops down and gets caught, causing the knock and sometimes an oil leak as well.
If it was a big end it would knock louder the more you rev'd it,sounds like too much advance timing. Pat
The engine has done 50,000 km since a rebuild. New parts throughout.
I bought it two years ago and have added about 10,000 km since then. It knocked when I bought it, the seller made sure it was nice and warm when I took it for a test drive - D'Oh!
The sump has been off and the caps are good. Vacuum pump replaced last year because it was leaking oil.
Thanks,
Mathew
Get a diesel tune done on it,I would strongly recommend Berima Diesel, the tune costs $900 as it involves flow testing the injectors as well as pump tune which eats up time. Pat
if you can get to tr spares in padstow, give me a ring and i will look at it while i'm over there working on some of their other stuff. 0421509083 regards Rupert
The only way to accurately measure FIP timing is via plunger lift.
With a dial gauge this should take less than 20 minutes and will rule in or out timing.
Sounds like you are onto the diagnosis path - measure plunger lift and go from there.
Fuel lift pump can make a good ol noise
Dont discount the vacuum pump just because it is new means nothing (soo many new parts are ****)
Check tappets again including lash caps (just replace them)
New set of injectors is not too ugly

Thank you everyone for your comments. It looks like I might be on the right path then.
I think I'll start by swapping the pump from my Disco into the D'Fer. If the noise disappears that confirms the culprit.
All I need now is to get my hands on 2 x timing kits so I can remove the pumps without upsetting everything else!
Regards,
Mathew
