Anderson plugs for cranking/jump starting Recommendations.

Am wanting to put some Anderson plugs onto vehicles to be used for slave starting.

What size plugs do I need?
    1. SB 175
    2. SB 350

Who is a good supplier of the appropriate cable?

I think 350 but I expect it will be pricey. Jaycar sell the 175A at about $28 (probably Anderson copies).

What load can they handle for a short time? I'm assuming its 350A continuous, which isn't much for jump starting.

From Anderson direct the SB 350 is $19.26 ea for the plastic housing and $13.31 ea for the terminals making $45.88 each plug before they put it in a postpack. (SB 175 are only $20.16 complete)

You see why I'm wondering if we could get away with the SB 175

SB 175 current diagram as per the Anderson power products website:

How I read this (and I might be wrong) is that for a 40 degree celsius temp rise (above atmospheric), the connector will be able to handle the current as per the graph.

...So for 1/0AWG wire (0 Gauge, or 50mm2 cable), you could have an inrush current of approx 600A (eyeballing the graph here) for 6 seconds. (Refer to red dot below):

175s will be fine a thats their constant currant and the max peak is something like 5 times that.

I dont want to know what your trying to start if your going to draw over 500A over a set of leads trying to jump start.

if your patient and have any kind of life left in the croc batteries you can get away with doing it on the 50's you could ask but probably best not to...

Speaking of jump starting, anyone used those remote jumping studs that you clamp your leads onto?

Is there a reputable manufacture of them? Wouldn't mind seeing there specs.

    PS. Sorry for hijack question

OK just to throw a spanner in the works. Lotz, why not just use 1 set of 50 amp Anderson plugs and 6B&S cable ( 13.5mm2 ).

If you carry out a jump start properly, you will not be pulling 300 or 400 amps through the jumper leads, it is more likely to little over 100 amps.

I have for more than a decade now, used a set of jumper leads with battery grade clips at one end and a 50 amp Anderson plug at the other end and on a couple of occasions, I have connected this to an other vehicle, using a 5m long 10mm2 twin cable extension lead, with 50 amp anderson plugs on each end and had no problems what so ever in starting the crippled vehicle.

Even with a stuffed battery, the crippled vehicle's battery will still be supplying the bulk of the current when you start the motor on the crippled vehicle.
