Defender exhaust modifications
Hi all, Im looking at the terrafirma 'De cat" and silencer replacement pipes on my 2011 2.4L defender. Anyone had any experience with them, and will i need to tune it straight away?, will i do damage if i dont ect, ect? Looking for a bit more power and a little bit of noise (not Realy loud, just a note) and slightly better fuel economy. I realise that I will need to tune it to gain the full effect of the pipes but for now im not looking to spend that much.
Thanks guys

No experience with the Terrafirma product but in reply to the other Q's. The performance increase is marginal thus no need to tune your ECU to suit, you might get 2-3% improvement. On a 4wd pumping out a little over 100 kw, barely noticeable. You will notice better performance increase while driving on a cool misty morning (lower combustion temps, increased air density) than driving after replacing the cat and centre muffler. You might notice better performance higher in the rev range when gases usually back up from the factory restrictions. If you can measure fuel economy improvements you are doing well. Too many variables during driving to reliably gauge any theoretical fuel economy improvement.
The exhaust will come into its own when you retune and add an intercooler. On its own don't expect miracles.
Long and short, it won't harm your truck and will make it louder as you desire. The rest is for the dyno and campfire chat.
For reference: i have the same engine with a 3" exhaust, no cat, high flow centre muffler.

I have a MY11 (2010) 2.4 and I swapped the Intercooler over to a Allisport one (and silicon hoses) and that made the motor run a little better. About 3-4 weeks ago swapped over the to the Terrafirma as you are looking at.
I have noticed that the turbo kicks in earlier and the pull and pickup is slightly improved. I haven't done a long run yet to see about fuel efficiency. I will know if its any better or not as I always get 670/620Kms (without campertrailer/with camper trailer) give or take a couple of kms when the low fuel light comes on
My next step is to get it re-tuned (funds permitting).
Andrew from Allisport did mention to me not increase the exhaust size as it had caused them issues, but in my case i already had the Terrafirma one so wasn't an issue. If you need to know more about the issue probably best to talk to Andrew as I didn't get any more information about the issue.
If you in the eastern suburbs I can recommend an exhaust place that did the work on mine.

On its own, not worth the trouble.

On my mates puma we did the same exhaust mods but we also did the air intake mod DEFENDER2.NET - View topic - Air box mod and decat
Maybe we didn't gain any hp but the defender feels much more smoother especially on low revs and with more "oomph",definatly not placebo gains, when compared to mine which is much more tuned,it's difficult to say which one is tuned(on some certain rev range)
I'd say do it but also pay attention to the air intake!
Cheers.
