    Disco/ Defender intercooler notes

For those with the cash, the UK aftermarket parts supplier Bearmach has a 50% larger intercooler available at about AUS$1,150. This fits is place without any mods at all to the vehicle. Bearmach claim that this can boost power by up to 20%. In WA Brit Parts, Welshpool import them.

My 1977 Defender rubber hoses were looking sad and gooey so I invested in best quality 50mm blue silicone from Turbotech in Perth for the critical 90 degree bend turbo outlet and the short lower coupling hose. I replaced the formed top hose with a standard reinforced rubber one. Result was a 20% restoration of lost turbo boost (measured on the Redline turbo boost gauge from Auto One) for about $120.00.

As mentioned in other threads regarding cooler air = more power, it is possible to add an extra intercooler if space can be found but it is important to point out that this must be in parallel not series as I have seen suggested in some other threads, i.e. 50mm 'Y' pieces have to be made up.

    Parallel not series

If the 2 intercoolers are in series the air resistance path is increased to the extent that you may not get full turbo boost. If they are parallel, the air path resistance is reduced as well as the air cooling being improved.

I think those prices are a bit over the top, you can get larger intercoolers for way cheaper than that over here. If anyones interested you would be better off buying them dirrect from the UK, from someone like Alisport or Twisted Performance etc.
