Battery Jump Starter & Charger + Trickle Charging

    Hello All,

I am somewhat over my current "light-duty" battery charger. My current charger features an "auto-off" function that signifies that the battery is fully charged when the green light is on. Once the green light is on the charging ceases and this is supposed to mean that the battery is fully charged. However, this state of being fully charged disappears as soon as an ignition key is turned on. This means that the battery still requires more hours of further charging.

I am also over having to drive a Land Rover into the paddock to jump start the tractor to get a supposedly charged battery to crank over so I can keep mowing the grass.

Yes I am buying a new battery - not from the place where I bought my last one from either. I am also going to check that one of the terminals has not been blown apart by someone inside the store. An employee who lies and blames the person who buys the battery for not installing it properly. Old story ...

To keep the new battery up to scratch I am just wondering if anyone has one of these ...

    Trickle Charge
For providing a trickle charge - one battery is in a tractor that is parked in a shed. I would have to extend the wires that go from the battery to a solar panel mounted outside of the shed. What thickness wire should I buy? What would be a maximum length of the wire before the charge is reduced to not being able to trickle charge anything due to the resistance in the wire?

What size panel would be best to be able to keep up with a N70ZZL battery?

    Thanks for your assistance.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

If your solar panel has a regulator, what does it limit the charge to - 10 amps? I guess that would determine what thickness of wire you need. Your panel should come already wired and with a regulator.
Sounds like your battery wasn't holding the charge.
A good multi-stage battery charger (Projecta, C-Tek, Redarc etc) should get your battery up to at least 80% and then test it regularly and recharge it if necessary.

I bought an Ebay "30 amp" charger - I think Rossi sell the same one with their name on it.
It max's out at just over 15 amp going by my clamp meter, which is great for my purposes as I figured with the Ebay lies, it would probably only be about 20 amp..

Just checked again & they do.
