    Yep, sorry Brett.

JC has posted a very succinct likely cause.......... do a search, maybe have a look at the 'Good Oil' section.

There is plenty of info on timing 300 tdi IP's. We're all here to help.

    cheers, DL

No worries, sorry, didnt mean to bite, fully aware I am out of my depth here and if I had the coin I would take it straight back to the mechanic who re-fitted the fip and get it fixed. But, like a lot of us, I dont have the coin, and I don't have the luxury of driving another car - this is the only car I have so I have a very small window for doing work on the car between getting myself to work, my son ro footy training and games etc. Anyway, getting off track.....
Car does seem to be better after swapping out the lift pump, and will know more after I take her on a decent drive tomorrow. Frustrating though that after picking up the car after the fip service and its not running right, and I did my research, asked the mechanic the question about the timing being out or the boost compensation pin sticking and he was adamant that it was all good. :banghead:

Sorry brett too but typing etc on this phone is just awful. Do some research here about timing checking. I am sure you will be able to get it right. I am surprised you were told it is fine without even offering to go over it and check as there was obviously an issue after the pump was fitted....

I hear ya about typing on the phone, it sucks, my fat fingers keep hitting the wrong buttons all the time, thank god for predictive text! Do appreciate the advice, and have been hoping that it wasn't the timing, because for some reason I have an irrational fear about playing with it. Don't mind swinging the spanners just need someone to tell me what to do first time round if ya know what I mean.
Disappointed with mechanic when I rang him a couple of days after picking the car up (which was 3 weeks ago), asked if the timing was out etc and was told he wouldn't be able to look at it til the 11th of may and he would need it for a day or two.
Guess I just have to suck it up and do it myself, cause I just cant afford for someone else to do it.
All good, we live and learn.

For goodness sake it takes 30minutes to an hour to check and adjust the timing on a tdi. Not good enough. You certainly are better off doing it yourself.

Might take half an hour to an hour for most people, but I have four kids here, and the incessant "dad, can I do this or have that or he said this" drags everything out fourfold. That said, you are right and I should just get off my arse and do it.
    See what tomorrow brings.

You misunderstood brett i was having a rant at the 2 days req to fix what is a very simple job on a tdi especially if the workshop is experienced in landies. And you shouldnt have to be paying any more or having to do it yourself...There are a few you tube vids no doubt about checking and adjusting tdi pump timing. Wish i was over there...

Yep sorry did think you were saying I should be able to do it an hour or so, my bad. And yep, I would have expected the mechanic to say " bring it down I'll have a look at it now" but it obviously wasn't on his high priority list.
To take a positive out of it, it will make me do it and learn more about my car in the process.
And I appreciate you saying you wish you were here.
    Cheers cobber.

Took the car on a decent run today whilst running a few errands and is definitely running better now the lift pump has been replaced, doesn't feel to be lacking power at gear changes like it was. But, was still very sluggish in 1st gear when cold. Once engine has warmed up no problems with 1st, only when cold. And still blowing too much smoke.
Spoke to the mechanic and he is a lot more accomodating this time around. Due to work reasons I can't get it down there this monday as originally planned, but he has said that when I can he will fit it in. Still wants it overnight though so he can see what I mean about 1st gear when engine is cold, which makes sense I guess. Asked again whether the timing could be out and he still thinks its not but will check, said that if it was out I would have these problems all the time not just when it is cold - does that sound right?
Going to run some fuel treatment through on the off chance I have dirty injectors or something, which I doubt as I fitted new ones about 18 months ago and haven't done a lot of k's since, but want to eliminate all the basic stuff.

Retarded timing is smokier when cold but all round underpowered. Does the engine sound quieter to you?
