I dunno John. There was no sign of arcing on the terminal posts.
I think I will go with Daves theory that low electrolyte and fatigue fracture of the internal connection lead to arcing and the explosion.
The pic on the left is a clean break from the bang.
The one on the right looks to have been in the process of breaking for some time. It may have been broken but still touching for a connection then as the acid level dropped it finally got exposed leading to the spark.
How many are driving around with a potential bomb under the bonnet
As I said these are 5 years old. I normally only get a couple of years out of batteries before they sulphate up so the acid level does not get a chance to get low enough.
I wont be buying anymore sealed batteries.
I will look for screw caps again , at least one can see what is happening and top up the water.
