Question Boost Gauge and what it is used for

Hi guys, time for me to learn about Boost. What is it? and is a Boost gauge handy on my D1 1998 300tdi? Can anybody clue me in please?
Thank you and have a great day - Gerry (wedgetail37)

I'm sure more knowledgeable people will elaborate more into detail but short and simple: Boost is air pressure pumped into your engine, generated by turbo. Boost gauge shows you this pressure. It is handy because you can see if your turbo is not generating enough or too much boost. Boost needs to be in certain limits. Factory set at1 bar for 300tdi for example.

    more boost = bigger e-penis.

as above, it used for measuring the air pressure where the sensor is, generally the manifold.

on my sr20det, my max boost should be 18psi, so if my gauge is reading 22psi, i know there is a problem

ir used fortelling you how hard your working the engine and for some early dianostics work.

coupled with an EGT gauge if you learn to drive the gauges will allow you to extract peak economy out of the engine and have an understanding as to what the engine is doing

with boost and EGT gauge you can then up the performance of the engine and keep it within safe limits at all times.

    very very roughly.

a boost gauge will tell you how much power the engine is trying to make and an EGT will tell you how much torque your trying to make.

both combined can be used to rough out your anticipated fuel consumption.

both are vital when you give the TDI a lecture about poor performance.

for example... covering 300KM with the EGT on 645 the whole way and a 30 psi boost gauge pegged makes the fuel gauge drop faster than belladonnas knickers. but then you do that 300 KM in something less than 3 hours. and you use nearly 65l of disel in the process.

doing the same trip back with the boost rarely over 7 and the egt never going past 400 means you get to hold your girlfriends hand and thigh for a little over 5 hours while she sleeps on your passanger seat but you olny use 26 l of diesel.

the latter is more fun, especially when she slinks over and wraps her arms aournd your armand rest her head on your shoulder for most of the trip.

the starrs are nice at that time of night too.

all of thats secondary and while the latter is more fun, especially when she slinks over and wraps her arms around your arm and rest her head on your shoulder for most of the trip, the stars are nice at that time of night too.

The most important thing for me is that the glow from my boost gauge compliments her skin perfectly and with my poor night vision provides just enough light to see her properly.
