tyre size
I need some new tyres soon and need some help choosing which size to go for. I have a '89 Rangie that will have a 2" lift when i get the tyres.
My options seem to be either a 245/75-16 or 235/85-16. I l would like the bigger size for offroad clearance but am worried about my gearing.
What do you run and do you have problems with either, rubbing, loss of steering etc?
If it make any difference they will be muddies- BFG MT of the new Cooper STT's.

hey alex
dont know if this would help but on my other rangie i put not quite sure but around about a 235/70 i think and when i got it back they scrubed on the front radius arm only a full lock. that was on the standard rim (alloy)
i would say the gearin would change a bit low range wouldnt be that low anymore

I have BFG 245.75 x16 on my 92 Rangie.
I have a 2 inch lift at back and about 1 inch at front , but 245s will fit without rubbing on standard suspension.
However to be safe you must
1 grind down the bolt sticking out at 12 oclock inside the rear guards
2 cut at least half of the flange off on the guard behind/underneath the rear door.
Although theoretically it cannot touch, and there is about an inch clearance, I have seen a car touch there on bad corrugations. Its amazing how much those donuts can compress!
3 adjust lock stops to suit.
To clear 235.85x16, IF USING FULL ARTICULATION , you need a 1 inch body lift or it will hit hard on the back half of the guards, and that is on a 2 door with more room than a 4door.. Also I think on the bulkhead on lock at the front, if suspension compressed.
Gearing is 6% up with 245s and I think 10%Regards with 235s. 6% is noticable . 10% is a lot. Really 4.1 diffs are desirable with 235s.

Well, I recently sold my ARB and wheel carrier as I didn't like the 70KG on the back bumper.
I fitted my 245.75x16 in the back so you can too!!!!.
Cut the carpet off the wheelarch where the tyre will touch and scrape off the sound insulation. Bash the back of the wheelarch with a mallet about 10CM. Bash the edges of the floor indentation with same mallet.
Build a steel frame around the seatbelt inertia reel.
I keep mine in place with a Nylon tie down connected to a boat deck loop rivetted next to the tailgate and a screw in loop in a threaded hole in front of the tyre.
I think a 215.85x16 (same diameter)will fit better but haven't been bothered yet.
Its up to you whether you use a smaller tyre, but knowing Rangie diffs I wouldn't want to go a long way at high speed.

G'day, I run 245/70X16 Simex Road Trekker in my 84 Rangie with stock suspension and a heavy engine, doesn't rub at all, even over very broken terrain.
Cheers Scott. 8)

tyres
Guys, I run a set of Yokohama 255/65/16's on my 97 Disco. I got them from a second hand tyre importer. They work well and only rub at full left lock.
Cheers Nick

i just fitted 265/75-16's BFG M/T. They rub on the radius arm at full lock but you get used to it. With the 2" lift i get no rubbing else where. Did some offroad work and they were great. Havent tested full articulation yet, but so far so good.
