It's a symptom of low voltage, measure the voltage on the battery with ignition off and with engine running and make sure that the clamps are making good contact, you have to rule out a dieing battery or a charging problem first of all.
Hi Guys,
Got stuck on the way to work yesterday, car just lost engine power then all gauges went crazy and then stopped. i still had lights AC fan indicators ect but just no engine and had M/S lights flashing on the dash. wiggled some wires under the bonnet thinking it was loose earth and hey presto she would start again. What i did find whilst looking was a series of relays chattering in the fuse box in the engine bay. i took a video of what was hapening and as you can see i found some of the problem but when looking at all the wiring everything is tight. any ideas on what this could be. is there terminals below the fuse box that may have rattled loose. As of today is stopped 6 times on a 5km journey.
thanks in advance

Sorry did forget to mention a few important things.
[*]New alternator and battery 6 weeks ago.[*]battery voltage is 12.6v with all accessories off[*]Alternator is 13.7v when running[*]engine will crank at great speed (new battery) but will not fire up until the
relay chatter stops.
Unfortunately i can't see the film on my tablet due to some unsuported plugin ... anyway when the symptom occurs be prepared with a multimeter and measure voltage between body and that big fusible link FL1 in the engine bay fusebox, eventually use some wires and bring them into the cabin from engine bay through the window and put a voltmeter as to see it and watch the voltage when it happens... according to the result we'll speak then...it could be a bad contact in the ignition switch too, i'll tell you how to rule this out when we know more

Sounds a bit like what mine did some years ago. It was the inertia switch on the firewall behind and to the left of the turbo. It became partially pushed or actuated reset it and has not played up in the last 300 000km, push it in to reset it it's worth a try.

I've seen it, it seems that is some bad contact there at the fusebox, according to the symptom the problem might be especially with the main relay R9...the simple way would be if you could get hold of a known good fusebox to swap it cos it can be internal issue as it's built in layers but untill then you can rule out a bad contact in a connector cos it has many on it's back, it's hold only by 3 screws, undo them and you can gain access to the plugs with some talent and jiggle around there to see what happens

So a bit of an update. Pulled out the fuse box last night cleaned up all of the terminal and connections blew it out and put it all back in. Have tried to replicate the fault I had in many different ways and happy to say so far there have been no issues. Fingers crossed thanks for the help guys !!
