Not sure if its true, but I remember reading in a thread a while ago on LRE, I cant find the thread, but I think it mentioned that the bonnet to engine clearance was less on the TD5 compared to the TDI, hence being the reason for them scrapping the extra under bonnet bracing and spare tyre mount.
Might pay to look into it.
G'day All, came across a bonnet for 110's with the necessary tyre carrier on the bonnet, it has slight damage on the right front of the bonnet it is white in colour anyone interested pm me cheers Dennis
Mine's the same but with slight damage to th right rear (ie nearest the cab) due to obvious stress of a heavy tyre bouncing around on it for years. So even when they work, they are still not ideal. Much like the rear door hinge problem on the wagons....

How much does a wheel weigh and what effect when it comes through the windscreen when you come to a sudden halt in a collision.

i don't know if this would be an issue, that is unless you are travelling in reverse very fast.
and i think you can get a conversion kit for the earlier defenders/110's, but don't forget one of the most important parts of the kit does not go on the bonnet, it is the bonnet catch spring, for a spare wheel bonnet, it is a heavier spring to handle the extra 40 odd kilos of spare.
Even on the Disco, the TD5 rubs on the bonnet noise deadening material.Quote:

Factory bonnet wheel kit fitted to my 300Tdi 110 wagon worked fine for about 100,000 kms and then started cracking reinforcing struts and collapsing bonnet - so no more wheel on front! Like rear door, is not strong enough mount for prolonged dirt road use. Pity as is a great place for second spare and I have heard of people being protected by bonnet spare when cab crushed on rollover.

OOPS! :oops: forgot the all important Insurance man.
Also if you run 265/70/16's better raise the seats.
Not a real good mod to do, nothing is in its favour.

The big thing in it's favour is if you're struggling for room it's a good thing. I agree it would play havoc with vision. You could never run with it around town.Quote:
