    td5 oil leak (surely not...)

I have a slight leak coming from the top of the td5 in my defender. Looking at it after cleaning it appears as though it is coming from the gap between the camshaft top support bridge (?) and the head. Is this a usual place for then to leak and if so whats the repair. I can't seem to see a gasket in the parts explosion.

Check your fuel regulator first. Common issue it can travel along and down.
Can also destroy your clutch and starter..

When I pulled mine apart it was stuck together with goo.
I believe they are bonded together with a paste. Im sure rthe rebuild kits come with such Sealer.

Well it looks unlikely to be the tappet cover gasket!!!LOL

But it is common for them to leak at the rear where they dip.

Well you were on the money with the tappet cover leak.
The rubber gasket was still quite new (squishy not hard) but if you see in the pic there is brown goo on the top of the gasket and grey on the bottom. This looked a little sus so I took it off. Found that the half moon at the back of the tappet gasket was wet through. It you look at these gaskets in the bottom face were they sit in the top of the head are raised lines or bumps. On the old gasket these were practically non existent on the half moon. The new gasket however they were protruding quite substantially. So changed it out along with all the bolt spacer/grommets without goo and no problems. Moral ti the story is check the quality of your gaskets.....
Oh the brown goo was actually kwik grip by the looks. Thats a first for me.
