Hi,

I would appreciate any advice/ opinion on a whining noise coming from my TD5 Defender over the past few days. It is a 03 TD5 110 which I have had for the last 8 years. I had car serviced 6 weeks ago and belts, wheel bearings all ok. Oil levels in diffs, gearbox and transfer case are all ok and there does not appear to be excessive play in uni joints. The clutch was replaced about 4 years ago (apart 100 000km).

Noise was not present when in neutral initially but it is present now, when the car is in neutral at idle. It goes away when the clutch is depressed and is loudest in gears 1,2,3 and is not present in 4th gear.

I have a feeling it is gearbox related ? one of the bearings but I would appreciate any opinions on this.

Also if it is the gearbox am I looking at $1000's just to pull it apart and diagnose the problem and would it be better to get a reconditioned box?

Finally I live on the southern end of the Gold Coast, does anyone have a recommended mechanic/ gearbox specialist who works with land rovers and are a reasonable price?

Thanks for any assistance,

Scott
