    Rear shock nut

Tried to change a rear shockie on the weekend. Got the top nut loosened about half way then it just started rotating on the stud without coming off. Now it won't tighten or loosen further. The stud isn't turning.

Any ideas for how to get it off??

Also, what's the best way to grip the shock when undoing the bottom nut without damaging it? Last time I did this I just punched a screwdriver through the shock because they were stuffed anyway.

What vehicle are we talking here ? You will probably need to replace the mount so just unbolt the whole thing off the chassis, vice gripes on the flat of the pin and if i'm chucking the shock the old punch the screwdriver thru trick as well.

    Rear Shock Nut

I use a pipe wrench to hold the lower end of shock absorber to stop it rotating.

    Cheers

Assuming you can get it over the nut, then a nut splitter might do the job. Stanley 2 Piece Nut Splitter Set I/N 6110231 | Bunnings Warehouse

I use a 30mm wide nylon ratchet strap.
Wrap it around the body of the shock so that it tightens as you undo the nut. The other end is attach to the chassis somewhere.

The upper nut and lower are very similar but have different threads.
You might find both threads are destroyed.

Found that out after having my shocks installed by "professionals"
