G'day Folks
My appologies Shaunp, ops: as I was quoting from the Haynes Manual,Series 2,2a,3, Four Cylinder Petrol, page 99 chapter 8. Axle Types: Hypoid, Fully Floating. As Iam not a diff specialist i just went by what the book said :?
cheers

Rocket they look pretty much the same. The main give away is if you look at pinion end of the diff it will be in the centre line. With a Hypoid diff the pinion is off set to the bottom of the diff. This allows the the pinion to mesh at an on an angle across the crown wheel which gives greater/multi teeth contact also allows for larger pinion because it is deaper in the diff. This is the main reason for extra strength cause you are not just driving on one tooth.
Not sure why the Haynes book says Hypoid, but it's wrong LR manuals will say Spiral bevel.
