I am looking at buying a Range Rover (haven't seen it yet). The owner says the bearing in the transfer case is worn. It got noisy so he has pulled the inspection plate off and there is movement in the shaft. Is this common or not? Does the whole transfer case need to be rebuilt?
Thanks
Andrew

Thanks - it might only be something simple
Better not tell the current owner that

Mine got noisy, within a week it was undriveable. Only had to replace the hilighted part s here. Still, to do it only a weekends work and less than $400.

That seems a bit harder. I will have to look at it next week (if he still has it then) after I go to the show.

It's most times cheaper to overhaul the whole whatever (transmission, diff, engine) in one go than replace bits and pieces. Sooner or later you end up chasing your tail when replacing only the "bad worn" and that starts costing more than if the replacing was all done at once.Originally posted by Andrewpv01

Whats a "fair" price for a transfer case rebuild in a 5 speed RR? I would probably pull it out and send it to Sydney. Should I get the gearbox done at the same time? Does the gearbox/transfer case come out from underneath in a Range Rover? :?
