Having an alloy coolant header tank would make it very hard to see the coolant level.
Hi Everyone ,
Just a quick question.Talking to a mate on site the other day with no less than 9 RR's and looking under the bonnet he advises me to think about changing plastic header tank to alloy as he has had them split..I would just like to ask the community your views..Alloy or replacement plastic??
Having an alloy coolant header tank would make it very hard to see the coolant level.
I had plastic header tank leaking on my 3•9 RRC.
It was leaking from the joining seam.
Replaced it with a new plastic one and it hasn't leaked since.
I still have to remove the cap to check the level as its all black plastic.
The original black plastic ones have been known to explode under heavy engine load and take out the engine at the same time. This happened to a customer of mine when his D1 was around 5 years old and the wife drove it up the local freeway climb until it ground to a smoking halt.
A milky white plastic replacement one is supposed to be better made.
My milky white one is over 10 years old and going strong. Pat
if your repeatedly taking out header tanks an expansion caps you have other issues.

If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
The milky White plastic tanks are the best, the black ones cause splits and the thin CLEAR plastic ones are so low quality they are a Joke.
As Blknight said, if their constantly going, you might have other pressure related issues like possibly a blown head gasket .
Thanks everyone , 3.9 was just rebuilt and iam thinking more along the lines of preventative maintenance..It seems such a weak link in the chain, hence my concern..
