    LT230 wear opinions please.

    Howdy folks.
So yesterday I did my first drain and refill of the LT230 on the D2. Easy job. It was last done at 218k by a sydney workshop, and I'm now at 259k.
So when I drained the oil, I drained it into a 2L ice cream container, which was sitting in a 5L ice cream container, to catch any overflow, etc. It filled the 2L container to maybe 1-1.5cm below the top, and there was probably 1-1.5cm of oil in the 5L container as well. However when I transferred it all to the 2L milk jug to go to the tip in and I only got maybe 1.5ish L in
So I've topped it up with Penrite 80W90, and it's certainly running smoother and maybe quieter but that might be placebo. I had a shudder at 100kmh, which would totally disappear by 110kmh, and this now seems totally gone.
The case has, what I assume is the intermediate shaft leak, however the 100kmh shudder has only been there in the last....10k kms? and besides that, at all other speeds it was perfectly smooth and quiet, minimal backlash etc.
On the magnet, there was the following:

Note, in the picture I've run my finger around the edge to 'spike' it up. There were no large chunks.

And then we get to the brass....

This was the largest chunk I found, there were maybe 3-4 much smaller bits, and I noticed a lack of the brass shimmer to the oil.
The oil was dark, but I could still tell it was supposed to be green.
So thoughts on the perceivable wear would be great thanks
I'm going to start looking for an LT230 to slowly reco so that I can swap them out in one go.
    Cheers

If you want to do a good job you need this Land Rover LT230 Transfer Box Master Rebuild Kit | eBay and the HD cross pin if you can afford, what's certain that are totally worn/degraded are those 4 differential thrust washers(FRC6968), i think that part on your finger is from one of them, when mine was opened two of them were completely vanished and two unrecognisable.

I think Sierra is on the right track about the washers. Theyy do disintegrate although mine in the defender are still oki at 334k, but that's cause I lock the different at the first hint of work. The other dross on the bung is normal and not to worry at. Regular oil changes are the go.

The above are spot on. Exactly what I found in mine. Pulled it apart when I did the clutch and found one brass thrust washer gone and three very badly chewed up.
I used the Ashcrofts master rebuild kit and HD cross shaft and down loaded the LT230 repair manual from the Legion Land Rover site (Colombian Land Rover Owners) it's in Spanish but you can make out the links to the manuals page then it's in English.
Just note that you don't get any shims in the master rebuild kit to shim the bearings up. But Ashcroft do these as well.

Yep, Ashcroft master rebuild kit and shim set will be on its way, along with an ATB centre diff.
For what its worth, it's never done any real hard work off road in the time I've owned it, and neither of the previous owners took it offroad.
    Cheers guys

Has yours got the difflock or is it the skip model like mine ? I think the non lock diffs may be a bit harder on the shims. I want a ATB for mine too, just need to get priorities right

Has difflock but has seen a decided lack of off road at this point. Only just fitting the lever

I thought about getting a ATB centre diff but apart from Ashcrofts being out of stock I decided against it. The reason mostly rested on the fact that my Defender spends most of its time towing our camper to the good spots rather than 4WDing when we get there. I really couldn't justify the extra cost. I don't plan on selling the vehicle anytime soon but I thought the HD cross-shaft would fit my needs better.
I will be more careful to lock the diff as soon as I hit loose ground though as I sure I coursed the shim disintegration when I failed to lock the diff on some wet grass one camping trip and spun the wheels prior to the ETC cutting in.
