Just make sure you get it inspected by a mechanic who really knows the TD5. I bought the same but with more km on the clock and so far have spent over $7,000 on repairs in just over three months. Latest thing to go appears to be the fuel pump and to repair them means taking out the fuel tank.
So I have a Defender that I am not confident is reliable which means it is not suitable for my intended use.
Conversely I suspect there are many owners who are more than satisfied with it - but they are probably a lot smarter than me when it comes to buying a second hand car...
Also, keep in mind that there are many parts of Australia where you will not be able to get parts or find anyone that knows anything about the TD5.
Having said all that I am presently seriously considering trading mine in for a new TD5 Defender. Main reason is there just isn't any vehicle like it...

I have read and heard that "If you have a good Tdi, stick with it. There are too many bad TD5s out there". The good ones are very good but the bad ones are numerous.
Having said that - those who are of my acquaintance have does all right out of their TD5. Septimus is the first person with first hand experience to express concerns about his TD5. Rest of it has been gossip and asides by journo's.

One blessing at last - the fuel pump problem turned out to be the fuel pump relay. It was intermittent but finally failed totally enabling me to track down the fault.

I've had my 2002 TD5 130 for 4 1/2 months. Its been good so far except for a few minor things. First was a water leek problem that turned out to be the radiator cap and a small lek in the radiator. Took a while to find that one though. my lights fail every now and then due to a bad connector in the switch (I think I finnaly fixed that one last night).
Other than that in 20,000 k's it hasn't missed a beat.

So far, 115,000km, the motor hasn't missed a beat. Have had a couple of minor problems with other parts of the vehicle but nothing out of the ordinary.
Mind you, I have had it from new and religiously serviced. 8)
