My ears don't work very well, so it's hard to judge, but, since it's happened after the head has been off I would be checking that the valve gear is getting enough oil. I'd also be checking all the manifold associated gaskets and stud tightness. A slight exhaust leak can screech as you describe. Have a look to see if the timing belt is running true ( guessing here ).Is the car performing normally?

    Hi John,
Looks like I'll have to dig back into it. What's the easiest way to check if there is enoug oil on valve gear? Cover off and check for splattering?

Car performs normally. No power loss. Bit better that before head was off. But that's expected.

    Thanx

Yeah, cover off. Even at idle you'll get a fair idea. But wait for Dave or someone to chime in before going too far. Good luck.

Had a look with rocker cover off and engine running. There is plenty of oil being pumped between pushrods and rockers and oil coating shaft on each side of each rocker. So I'd say it has plenty there. I backed valve adjustment to 0.3 mm to eliminate valve hitting the piston maybe but no help, i think this would be more tapping noise than screeching anyway. After all this I managed to narrow it down to crankshaft pulley area. Maybe inside timing cover. But I don't know what might be producing that sort of noise down there. Looks like it will be timing cover off in a hit and miss attempt. No other options for now. Interesting thing is that I can't pick it up with stetoscope anywhere but it without it it's definately present.

Most likely timing belt associated. If it hasn't been done for a while now is a good time, can be a real show stopper if there's something going in there.

    Hi loanrangie,

Yeah it is not easy to pick it up. Different players / speakers play different kinda of same sounds it seems. Have you tried this one

At 4 seconds it has distinctive pulse of the sound I'm talking about.
