    Do they crack easily?

    yes.

use a very small bit, a very high speed and very light pressure. drill 2 holes one at the bottom and one at around the 4 or 8 oclock position

dont try it if you have the original glass lenses on a series. just notch the seal at the bottom.

    To drill glass:
-Have the glass in water to absorb vibrations (simplifiying)
-Use a brass tube as drill bit at slow speed and feed with corundum/carborundum powder <400#as a slurry for cutting
-Play with a expendable bit first

Works with telescope mirrors which have many hours of grinding, polishing and figuring before drilling.

    for optics and mounting...

putting the hole in the glass before you grind it sets up a stress riser point which can lead to cracking or deformation from the pressure being applied to the glass during grinding.

the hole in the brake light lens thing...

the lights are the only thing on a landrover that does not leak. which is stupid, they're not supposed to get water in them in the first place but they do, and you'd think that being a landrover as soon as something has fluid in it would leak out naturally but no.

Thanks for the answer, i've kinda expected that even though i've never had massive water ingress problems in the brake lamps, i've noticed some condensation last time when i had to replace a bulb(more than 2 years ago) then i improvised and taped one of these [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Packs-1GrCotton-20pk-Silica-Desiccants-Packets/dp/B004FC5VT4"]Amazon.com - Dry Packs 1GrCotton-20pk Silica Gel Desiccants Packets - Small Desicant@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51nKsySVsLL.@@AMEPARAM@@51nKsySVsLL[/ame] inside each lamp on the bottom of plastic cover(it's almost unnoticeable from outside) last month i thought to replace them and the lamps were dry like a bone inside

A hole may let water out but will also allow water in only quicker.

I'm not sure what all the water concern is about,,, the internal bulb holders in original rear lenses on the van have failed and parts are unobtainable. I'm going to (carefully) sikaflex complete new led lights onto the originals. I just need a hole to feed the new wiring through the old lens.
    simples.
