AM Aircon?

Hiya'll.

My baby '94 300Tdi Defender 110 Station Wagon does not have aircon. It was not a requirement of mine when I bought her in '96.

However over time requirements have changed, and now I desire aircon in the vehicle for when I take the missus up north (her body doesn't handle the heat very well).

Also I may end up with the added bonus of strangling the engine when going downhill, to enforce a primitive "engine braking" so I can go slower still ;-)

I know this is gonna be exhorbitantly expensive to purchase & install, and as I am in Switzerland at the moment I haven't chased it up too much. I've done some looking around on the web but all I have seen is the one on edworthys ( http://www.edworthys.co.uk/prodlist.asp?ca...itioning%20Kits ) for £1700. 8O 8O 8O

My question is: does anyone know if there are aftermarket aircons for Land Rovers around? Alternative has anyone retrofitted aircon to their Landy and can give some advice?

Thanks all.

AMC supplies the air con to Land Rover Oz. You can buy it from them.
Don't know if this is still current
AMC head office.
2 East St Granville. NSW.

Also do a search on Outerlimits here

I'm sure this was discussed a few months back with a couple of (other than AMC) recommended suppliers in SE Queensland.

Thanks rick130. Did a search and found some threads.

Not looking promising, and definately not looking cheap.

Oh well that was always the risk

Thanks again :-)

Glen,
Try this link to an old post of mine-

http://www.aulro.com//modules.php?name=For...4277&highlight=

it has the name of the retailer FNQ Autoair in Townsville, for more info do a search on posts by me (pullsy) here and on outerlimits and it should have some details on the process I went through to get to this aircon unit. Hope this helps. Cheers,
PUllsy

Wow pullsy.

All I can say is.. wow.

That's impressive.

Of course I'd still have to get the pumps and aircompressors etc. on top of that, as I don't have *any* aircon at the moment.

However I'll definately have a look at your piccies.. with this sorta setup I wouldn't have to worry 'bout losing any legroom either.

Wow.

Hey pullsy I've just been catching up on your other posts and I have a question.

Is this aircon unit complete? I mean, do I still need an old compressor etc. or is everything contained in this mini-bus aircon unit (which is quite funny, as my Def. is actually registered as a "mini-bus" )

Also another quick question - does it have any effect on demisting?

Cheers :-)

Glenn,
I used my old compressor and underbonnet stuff so that was not included in the price- not sure how much all that stuff would blow out the price. It works unreal- middle of summer driving from Townsville to Cairns had to turn unit off from lowest setting as I needed to warm up! Save about $10 of fuel per trip as well due to low cycling on/off of system as compared to old standard system which was constantly on as it couldn't every cool down sufficiently. Demisting was a worry but I have found that the placement of the system blows air along headliner down windscreen onto dash and bounces onto person- had a mates wife in the front seat the other day and she was examining the dash wondering where all the cold air was coming from. Because the air follows this route whenever the windscreen starts fogging up I just turn the a/c on for a minute to clear it- makes the car fairly fresh but quickly gets rid of any fogging. FOr another option look up a post at overlander by a guy called Gerry who installed a rooftop unit to do a similar job- expensive though at around grand (search under topic- red dot). Hope all this helps- keep firing any questions you may have and I will attempt to answer them

Thanks pullsy, will do.

I am getting an internal/external rollcage fitted to my baby, I guess that will interfere with the flow of air along the roof.. :? Though the vents appears low enough that they may not be impacted by the rollcage, or minimally at that.

Can't think of any questions at the moment, I'll have to wait and see what the missus says. She's not tech savvy, however she does have an annoying habit of asking the right (or wrong, depending on your point of view) questions  8)
