TD5 Turbo Boost Settings

I am taking my TD5 down to the local turbo place in Cairns on Friday to have the boost level checked. He does not have the specs for the TD5 Turbo and asked me to obtain them.

Can anyone tell me the boost setting and tolerances for the TD5 Turbo in a Defender?

i think its around 12 pounds of boost

had mine turned up to 19 once, but didn't make a great deal of difference

Here we go!

I heard it was 17psi, but cannot verify it.
The RAVE disc does not give a value which is rather odd. perhaps Test Book is used to set it up?

The TDi300 was 15 psi.

I find 15psi a bit hard to believe I would expect it it be around 7 to 10psi.

I wouldn't expect to get any performance increase by upping the boost pressure unless you also improved the airflow through the engine ie Bigger ,more efficient intercooler and bigger dump pipe and exhaust.

I've heared that you can boost power and torque by about 30 to 40% in the TD 200 and 300 using this approach, then you need to retune to take advantage of the increased flow.

At a starting CR of around 19:1 and an alloy head it sounds a bit scarey.
My Skyline has a CR of 9.5:1 and that's considered pretty high for a petrol turbo.

Can't wait to start experimenting I love Turbo!!

I ran a 0 to 30 psi gauge in my TDi300 and also fitted one of those neat little bypass valve things the rev heads use. I screwed it up to 17 psi and ran it for around 18 months like that. It also had the Dynamic Turbo's upgrade unit fitted. (Garrett T4 water cooled unit). Went very well.
It put out close to the TD5 Kw and torque, but just delivered it differently.
The TD5 could still run it off from the lights. (standard).

FWIW, Trev is right, a Tdi is 1-1.1 bar, which equates to 14.5-15.5psi. Mine runs right on 15.5 absolutely stock standard, sometimes spiking and holding to 16psi.

The ecu controls the wastegate in the Td5, and as has been said, the RAVE doesn't give an absolute maximum, but here's a clue, when it talks about one of the sensors going down, it pegs and holds boost @ 14.5psi.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>In the event of an AAP sensor signal failure, any of the following symptoms may be observed:
• Altitude compensation inoperative (engine will produce black smoke).
• Active boost control inoperative.
• Turbocharger boost pressure limited to 1 bar (14.5 lbf.in 2 ).
• EGR altitude compensation inoperative.
Hi guys,

maximum turbo boost pressure for a Defender Td5 should be 1.1 - 1.2bar (16.1 - 17.6psi).

On a Disco 2 (Td5), this is maintained by a wastegate valve controlled by the engine management ECU via a modulator valve.

Cheers,

MARCEL

Thanks to everyone for their posts and particularly to defute for the specific data I can pass on to the Turbo guy when he does the boost tests for me tomorrow (brought forward a day).
