92 RR Tacho and Alt question

    Hy guys,
The tacho signal comes out of the back of the alternator as we know, but i'm actually interested in what the signal is.

Is it 8 pulses for ever two revs of the crank shaft?

Reason I ask is I have a new alternator for my truck, but it doesnt have the tacho module in it yet. I would rather use the coil of my holden v8 for the signal. Obviously I need to find out what the signal is from the ingition module of the holden too.

    Any help would be appreciated.

As far as I can determine from looking at wiring diagrams of alternators with the connection, it is a simple tap off one of the stator phases before the diode. It is the W terminal (if fitted).

The signal will be just AC - a sine wave.

That means it is a dead simple modification for any alterator - just solder on a bit of wire.

    No modules are required.

Having said that, the tacho will need to be adjustable to be calibrated to the correct engine revs because the tacho measures the alternator RPM, not the engine RPM.

    Thanks Ron,

I guess the fact that the tacho can be adjusted I should just conect the feed from the holden loom and see what happens. Talking to Ringwood Speedometer repairs yesterday, they said they can recalibrate the tacho.
