Ian, as everyone has said, that seal face sits 4mm below the hub face so the dust scraper sits pretty much flush with the face.
IIRC I used ground down bearing cones and the depth gauge of my verniers to seat it as I was unaware of JC's drive flange tool trick way back then.

My rear seals have been in since 2002 and maybe 260,000km and no leaks. (oil bathed bearings)

The RTC3511 seal is sooo much better than later versions as it keeps water out as well as the lube in.

Thanks for the offer but we're about 3 hours drive from Logan. Anyway, I have a suitable drift to fully seat the seals now that I know they have to be pushed further in.
Seems that small lip on the outer edge is just to help it seal more tightly in the hub.

Haven't had an issue for over 80 000 kms.
That's how I do it as well.
It's easy, the seal goes in square, and the correct depth.

My opinion only but I would be using Corteco seals. Three times the price but worth using proven seals in critical locations.
