2nd Gear take off in unladen D90 -Ok?

 Newbie Question.
Just wondering if its normal/Ok to take off in 2nd gear in a Defender?
It feels like it should be. I wouldnt want to prematurely wear out the clutch.
Obviously Im talking about city driving, unladen, at traffic lights etc.

I do in my 110 but only when on a down hill stretch or if I've still got a bit of momentum. Feels OK and I dont have to slip the clutch at all.

If taking off in second gear is the solution what is the problem? 8)
In other words what is the benefit driving this way:
Fuel economy, keeping up with the traffic or saving effort?
There is no doubt that with the diesels torque taking off in second is not an issue on the flat or down hill but it depends on what is ahead and this works in all the gears depending on the conditions. Sometimes low range can be useful in crawling traffic as well.

Too low for what purpose?
Then short shift? 8)
It depends with the diesel (and petrol) on when and where the torque works to the optimum whether you are starting off or travelling uphill or down.
You've got the ratios so get in touch with the machinery and use it.
Same thing applies to twin cam turbo jap buzz boxes.
:?
I still wonder what the problem is?
As Ferrari's Michael Schumaker once confessed it was that component between the steering wheel and the seat.

All the old trucks I used to drive around in started off in 2nd unless there was a load in the back.
First gear was only to get the load moving.
Someone else can talk about ranged gearboxes.
I don't do it in the 130 'cos there's too much chug before the turbo kicks in.
Cheers
Simon
