Nick. The Vicroads website is a bit grey though, as to whether roof mounting is ok.

According to the article in the 4x4 magazine, they say that they have checked with the relevant state authorities,
which states roof mounted is legal except NSW and WA.

I think as long as there aren't national rules, then it will come down to how nice the Policeman that pulls you over is being.

Not that it's on the car at the moment but I had no issues with the 4 spotties I had on the roof along with the driving lights on the bullbar. Illegal by the rules shown, but never been an issue.

I was under the impression there was some ADR about the height of lights which required extra lights to be at a similar height to the headlights, but I don't have a reference. I thought that meant lights on roof bars could not be used on a public road because they might dazzle on-coming drivers. Has that changed?

I counted over 10 vehicles today travelling to Ballarat and back that had light bars on top of their bull bars. Seeing this is illegal by the looks of it, there obviously isn't much enforcement going on in this whole area.

Be wary though, there are some states that make it illegal to install spotlights anywhere behind the plane of the headlights.. So that would make traditional roof lights illegal even if the height is ok.

So a roof mounted light bar on the 101 would be fine.

In WA it is actually legal to have a roof mounted lightbar as long as it is covered while on the road and not activated by high beam. It is deemed an off road or "work" light.

Many years ago I used to rally in SA. The rule for lighting at that stage was, the centre of any driving light must be no higher than the centre of manufacture fitted head lights.

The scrutineers were pretty strict on it too.

Of course as time goes by rules change, unsure what it is now.
