    Loosen the locknut and turn the allen key only about 1/8 turn while holding the locknut as you only need a little bit. Tighten the locknut and check the slop again by rocking the shaft by holding the unijoint.
    Repeat until you are happy, erring on the loose side.
    Jack up the front wheels and check that there are no stiff spots from lock to lock.

    Cool thanks, just have to get the locknut lose now, looks like it hasn't been touched since new (1997).

    Hey Phillip how do u go about lossening your locknut ??

    Finding it very hard to get a spanner in there, must be pretty tight !! Would be nice to get a breaker bar and socket in there !!!

    I think I Have a ring spanner that fits. And I tap it with a mallet. There is just room from the rear Ahem!

    It is also worth looking at the steering damper while you are looking at your steering box. Sometimes a worn steering damper can accelerate the wear process in the steering box and therefore cause excessive backlash. Adjust the steering box and then get a good aftermarket steering damper.

    Yeah just fitted a new steering damper a couple of weeks back.

    Managed to get the lock nut lose, had to take the aircon pump off to get a breaker bar on the locknut, was bloody tight !!! Anyhow seems a bit better now.
