8.25R16 ok on original defender 5.5j rim??

I've got original 16x5.5j rims on the defender with 235/85R16 tyres on there at the moment, which are well known to be fine for that rim.
Theoretically 8.25R16 (which I believe should be close to 100% aspect ratio) tyres should be taller and narrower than 235/85R16 as:
    Taller: 235mm*85%=200mm=7.87" < 8.25"
    Narrower: 235mm=9.25" > 8.25"

So, 8.25R16 should be fine to put on 16x5.5j rims?

I ask because when I was last at a tyre shop I inquired about 8.25R16 but they said they were way too big, which conflicts with the theory I know about tyres.
    Cheers

While we're at it, what about 9.00R16? Just out of curiosity. In an ideal world they are 9" wide compared with 235/85 which are 9.25" wide.

Maybe the Military guys might be worth posting in their forum on here if no one answers here. I know some trailers had them & the 900x 16's were on some Landies.
For what its worth, I have Super swamper 9/34 x 16 on 5.5" rims which are fine. The recommendation for them is 6.5"

    8.25R16 approved rims are 6-6.5"

Fitting to sizes outside of this, in the case of a tyre failure accidents would render insurance invalid.

They also make the vehicle technically unroadworthy.

Personally, I would never run a specific tyre on an undersized rim...

Longer legs is exactly what I'm after. I think I'll get them next time around.

They are hard to find.Mainly used on Jap lite trucks so you only find highway pattern.
I had Dunlop Super Grippers, unfortunately they no longer make them.

Indeed, took me a while to find but back when I was looking for new tyres I'm pretty sure I found a place that could supply me 8.25R16 Michelin XZL, though I'd be after something a little less off-road focussed but they're definitely out there.
