Please help - wheel fluid leak

    Hi there,

My 130 has sat idle for 12 months while I was overseas, then last week I took it for a short drive. Today I need to move it from Mandurah to Perth (1.5 hr drive on freeway) but have noticed a fluid leak all over the rear driver side wheel - as per the picture.

So I think some sort of seal in the hub must have perished while it was idle, then started leaking when I drove it last week.

What is the leak likely to be and what are my chances of doing damage on the trip I must take today? I really don't have time or resources to fix now, but once its in Perth I'll have all the time in the world.

    Any advice appreciated...

    Mike

If it's only on the outside of the wheel I'll be going with the drive flange.
Grab a socket and check the 5 bolts are tight.
I seen this before on a mates and the bolts where only finger tight.

Yep its only on the outside. But the five bolts are plenty tight.

Which proves you've got oil in your diff...

You might want to check the level whilst you've got spanners in hand...

So if I check the diff level it seems fine. Nothing dribbles out when I pull the plug but if I stick my finger in there I can tell there's oil in there up to the level of the hole. It's a nice clear golden colour.

So on the outside of the wheel, this mess is coming out from under the rubber cap in the centre. You're saying this is diff oil leaking out via the drive flange? (Sorry if this is a dumb Q, I'm only new to this whole caper?)

In which case it seems to me - given my diff oil level is fine - I can easily stand to lose a couple more teaspoons via this leak, on the drive to Perth?

There is a seal that stops oil migrating from the differential housing to the wheel hubs.
Some people remove this seal to allow differential oil to enter the wheel bearings to lube them instead of using grease.
This requires a upgraded hub seal.
If yours has not been converted I'd suggest the seal is not doing as it should.
Drop the rubber plug off the flange and wipe it out, refit it and sort it out in Perth.
I drove mine not knowing I had a similar leak till the wheel was removed, being alloy wheels they hide the flange.
    Cheers, Kyle

    its fine, 2 usual sources.

    1. the gasket for the flange was omitted or a non oil stable sealastic was used and this has failed diff oil is migrating from the diff through the stub seal (which may have been omitted if the previous owner wanted oil fed bearings which is a good thing) and is n ow working out past the flange.

    2. the rubber axle cap has hardened and is no longer sealing. oil is now migrating out past the rubber cap.

so long as the diff oil level is good dont worry about it.

Keep an eye on the inside of the wheel, if the oil starts turning up on the inside of the wheel then its also getting onto the rotor and it will compromise your braking.

Looks to me like the oil is travelling over the top of the hub bolt heads on it's way from the middle to the perimeter under centrifugal force, so it's coming out of the rubber cap. It takes a surprisingly small amount of oil to make a mess like this so unlikely to be a show-stopper, I'd be checking the diff oil level daily if you're doing a lot of distance.
