Thread: Defender Tire Beginner Question

Hi there,

I'm new to light truck tires, and was hoping someone can help me -I've just discovered that the valve stem on one of the rear tires for my 2000 ex-army Defender is badly leaking - I'm going to choose to assume that it's just dumb luck and not a vandal.

Can someone give me any really basic recommendations as to decent truck tire brands and hopefully, replacement shops in the Melbourne area? I currently have Olympus 7.50R16LT, that's a brand I'd never heard of before moving to Australia.

Another stupid question - is it generally considered a good idea to swap out both rear tires at once, is it recommended to swap all 4, or am I safe with just the one? The tires have what looks like medium wear. My last vehicle was a sportscar and I only ever swapped out tires in pairs or as a set.

You don't need to replace the tyre if it's just a leaking valve stem.
Are you running them tubed or tubeless? I have/had many flats on wheels with poor quality tubes.

If you are replacing all four tyres, I would recommend the Michelin XZL. You can get them for a reasonable price if you ask around.

Of course, how you use your Defender will determine your tyre choice.
