What service life are you getting from centre diff shims in your LT230 transfer box?
Signs for this could be brass flecks in the oil or drive line slap.
The reason I ask...
With some technical support from JC and a hand from Disco 3 Doors and Mick_Marsh I've had the transfer box out/repaired/ refitted last weekend.
The Puma has done 124'000km(77'000mile) so it had the normal intermidiate shaft leaks.
As it was coming out to check the gearbox coupling and fix the leaks I took the opportunity to order a ATB to eliminate centre Diff shim wear and driveline slap.
I learnt my lesson with the now gone Disco2 where it had worn 2 Diff shims at similar mileage.
I pulled the diff apart and here is the result.
1xmissing shim, 1x1/2 shim only, 2x extreamly worn shims.

A quick drive and the ATB has transformed the way it drives.
On dirt it feels far more stable also.
A trip away in a fortnight will be real world test.

I'm only seeing a tiny photo, any chance of a full size pic? As I have a MY2016 Defender I'm planning on one of these sooner rather than later...![]()
Hope this works...

HMM, I dont even want to think what mine will look like---'96 defer with 330 on the clock.................................or the disco '02 with 280......... The ATB is the way to go for sure
Want to help me build up my TC with an ATB?![]()
And I'd say no, that's not an acceptable life span for them, however there are many aspects of the Puma drivetrain that IMHO are not acceptable..
I just pulled the nose off my LT230 in my 2002 D2 to fit a CDL.
I was alerted to what to look for as the CDL nose that I bought had 300KK on it and was full of brass dust, in a pocket just behind the front diff bearing and all along the bottom of the nose. It took quite a while to clean out.
The nose that I took off my LT230 had NO brass dust at all with 170KK on it and without taking the whole thing apart, the shims look in good condition.
My car was basically used as a daily driver for its whole life before I bought it 3 years ago and had basically never been in a bog AFAIK. I have been around OZ towing a 1000Kg camper trailer including the GRR.
IMHO the thing that kills centre diffs is letting a front wheel spin in a bog without the CDL locked as this creates a big speed difference between front and rear outputs and has that planetary gear whizzing around at a great rate of knots.

Mine looked very similar to those photos when rebuilt just before Easter this year, but it had done 215,000km. One shim absent, the remainder only a few thou thick but no wear into the carrier.
Yes individual driving manners are what determines how long the thrust washers last. I have seen some in LT95's with over 400K on them and still in good nick whereas some with much lower K's are virtually worn out (same setup as the LT230). As Phillip a said if you lock up the TC whenever there is any chance of differentiation between the front and rear you will lessen the wear on the thrust washers. Even on corrugated dirt roads. Personally I prefer the steel ones over the brass. They don't seem to wear anywhere near as fast and won't erode with gear oils.
Cheers......Brian
