    Any Cummins Mechanics out there?

    Evening all

Just wanting to pick someone's brains on Cummins, in particular someone with considerable experience on K19s

    Thanks

    G'day Jock,
    What's a K19, or what's it in might be a better question?
Future SIL is Cummins, so when I see him tomorrow night I may be able to organise something.
Funnily enough, he was over your way a few weeks back at one of the mines.

We had KTA 19 for about 10 yrs in the 2 trawlers we owned, the company I work for now still has 1 boat with a KTA 19 in it, the rest we have changed to 35 ltr Cat engine's.

I may not be able to answer your questions but I certainly know a couple of very good cummins guru's that may.

Anything in particular you need to know ?

    Hey mate

Just wondering if you ever had dramas with the head gaskets weeping oil?

We have quite a few in genset configuration, and it seems to be a fairly common problem with all of them

Interested to know if there was a tip or trick on replacement of the gaskets to stop them from leaking ?

    Thanks

We had 1 of 3 engines have that problem, and it happened to be the 1 on my boat. In the end we worked out oil is cheap and the minimal mess wasn't worth the problem. That may not be appropriate in your case.

I will speak with our fleet engineer and if he has an answer. Your not using Rimula X oil or a similar shell oil are you ?

I'd hazard a guess our ratio is about the same, think we have about 8 in total. Guess it's not a major issue, my direct supervisor is x-Cummins from up your way. Probably would have worked on your boats. He says it's common as anything and hard to find one that doesn't leak.

I used to work with an x-CAT mechanic who always put a smear of Silicone around the push rod tubes on a 3306, otherwise he said they were prone to leaking in a similar way.

I'm just trying to see if anyone has a similar fix

Our fleet engineer reckons if they are not leaking they are not working hard enough. It when they stop leaking you need to worry as it usually means you got no oil left... must be some sort of mechanics joke..

He did say a couple they have rebuilt with non genuine parts have been the one's that didn't leak , but make of that what you will. He has seen people who could have bought a bloody lot of oil for the money they have spent trying to stop oil weeps of diesel engines.

Ha he's not wrong either, the problems begins with a C, ends in S and has a couple of Ms in the middle. Impossible to keep oil in, just like Landrovers

As for the last comment, just need to convince our power station operator of that fact harder than you might think.

    Thanks for your help

I will speak to a bloke I know who does rebuilds on a lot of them and see what he says , but like most people they seem to think oil weeping out is not such a bad thing.
