    Heat shield for 2nd battery

I have an ARB battery tray which I am about to fit into my TD5 Disco and have heard that there may be some heat issues if I fit it in the passenger side corner next to the firewall - pretty much the only place there is a space unless I move stuff around.
Wondering what people have done to protect the battery from heat and if anyone has any pics of their set up.

    Aye, mick

Hi MickG, I use to make this type of battery tray out of stainless steel, for the D2s.

After you install the tray and fit the battery.

Take some measurements and then make up a shield that will protect the battery from radiated heat coming from the exhaust and motor.

Make the shield out of thin sheet stainless steel and mount it about 1 to 2 centimetres from the battery.

This works well and should give your battery a much better chance to stand up against the heat.

    Hope this helps, cheers

    Thanks drivesafe

That's pretty much what I'm thinking and hope someone has some pics to give me a starting point.
Also I will try and have a chat to you next GCLRO meeting about the dual battery system I have - Rotronics - partially installed and just doing my reasearch - it was in the car when I bought it.

    Thanks again, Mick

    2nd Battery Heat Shield

I fitted the ARB Batttery tray in 2003, and nowhere in the instuctions did I find any mention of heat problems etc, I also fitted the Megatronics Battery Charging controller, and wired the battery directly to an Engel Power outlet in the rear cargo area to run the fridge....
No drama for a few weeks, then when checking the battery fluid levels, found it was low, and after a long run very hot, so I checked the charging system (friendly sparky mate) and all was OK.
So i did the same as drive safe did, and fabricated a heat shield out of thin gauge aluminium sheet.
To date no more problems... If I can get my camera working again I can send some pics, but it really is an easy job, if a little fiddly... Just make sure all wiring is in before you start, and whatever you do dont chafe the wiring in your haste like I did!!

    Best of Luck,

    Johnsy

    Hi Mick
Find somebody wrecking a Ser3 Landy.
They have an alum heat sheild on the exh.I reckon they are almost perfect for the job,I have one saved just in case 8) 8) 8) 8)
As others have mentioned, any metal heatshield you can make the better to protect the battery the better, heat and batteries dont match.Alum dissapates heat the best 10 to 20mm gap the bigger the gap you can manage the better.
There are oter solutions, exhaust wrap,is well used in drag racing. Its a fibreglass, formerly asbestos wrap, that you put around the exhaust tubes,in non turbo applications it actually improves HP,the decrease in underbonnet temps in a turbo vehicle would have to be an improvement.
With all these Japper hi per cars around advice from a Performance shop should be easily found.
