    LED Flasher Relay

Has anyone on here replaced the Flasher Relay with a dedicated LED unit over load Resistors? If so what did you use and from whom? Did it work?
I have load resistors for the rear LEDs, but am upgrading the front to LED as well and debating which way to go. To me it looks simpler to go the Relay.

I have seen various Relays (4 pin type). Will a generic LED specific 4 pin type suffice like in the Holden Commodores etc or does it have to be a specific LED rating / item for the Land Rover Defender (2000 Xtreme TD5). You can buy 5 generic for half the price of buying 1 LR specific. Then there are also adjustable speed units.

    Thanks Mike,
That is what the first link is. Was wondering if there was any difference between the Wipac one and the generics in the second link. I know the Wipac ones are adjustable as are RDX but RDX ones stupidly expensive at around $80 from UK
    Cheers

$38-50 out here for the Wipac unit from allfour x 4 spares, but out of stock and seem to be the only ones that have them in Australia. Seems a bit steep for a relay.

Thanks for that. I suppose worst case scenario I stuff the relay and then have to buy the LED purpose unit. Does this mean I can remove the load resistors from the rear indicators as well? Or do you still need load resistors?
    Cheers

You can remove them, they won't do anything once you've made the changes to the flasher.

I'll be the poster - the fast flash (bulb out) function is an ADR requirement.

Very, very unlikely to ever be checked though!!! LED Flasher Relay

One question - with this modification does the trailer load light flash if you hitch a trailer up still?

I haven't done the LEDs onto the Defender yet so haven't checked.

    No, or rather maybe.

The flasher isn't an intelligent thing, it senses load resistance and that's it. It has three states; normal resistance = normal function (normal speed, single flash of trailer lamp), low resistance = trailer warning lamp, high resistance = double speed flash.

That's why if you put a bullbar with incandescent indicators on, your trailer light flashes full time. If you were to then change your rear indicators to LED, you'd go back to normal function. If you were to then hitch up a trailer it would go to trailer light full time flashing, except if the trailer has LED indicators - then it wouldn't.

    See what I'm getting at?

My Defender has LEDs all round, so I don't have a trailer warning light at all any more. That doesn't bother me, as any trailer I'm likely to tow has LED lights, and I'd have to have a trailer with 6 incandescent indicators for the trailer light to function anyway.

    Mike,
NOOOOOOOO. Now you have posted that next time you get pulled up we can expect to see the RTA pulling apart your flasher relay.
Would pay to see that, but yes get where you are coming from.
