Has anyone fitted a traxide headlight upgrade and spotlight set up with 2 x New Era dual relays into a D2? My son had a similar set up in his D2 when we got it but not connected. We hooked it up and thought it was ok until it melted the relay after failing on one side. Not knowing that while it did run the spotties it dropped out the drivers side highbeam, low beam worked ok. So I removed mine from the Defender and fitted it and it did exactly the same thing. I am a bit lost, is this because the D2 has a headlight relay? So thought ok will use one of the dual relays just to run the spotties and no would not work, went back to single relays and everything is fine. Am I missing something. I thought it was wired up ok but maybe not. Had 2 lights out, high beam link in between, power middle on other side and switch cables into others? Works fine in the Defender.

How does the dual relay run the headlights and spotties? Surely the dual relay is at capacity just doing low beams and high beams for the headlights? So a third relay is required for the spotties (noting that I believe under every states regs they’re required to have an independent on/off switch beyond just high beam trigger). I'm assuming that your not trying something dodgy like throwing the high beam and potties on a single relay, and/or running all the current to the spotties through an on/off switch, rather than just the trigger.
For what it’s worth, I run the dual relay for the headlights on my D2a to take the load off the headlight switch.
Hi Cragg, the relays and wiring circuits, are protected by 30 amp fuses, and both high beams have a common connection.
For one light to fail and not the other, you have a wiring issue.
You need to check all wiring because you may not have fixed the problem but by increasing the fuse size for the circuit, you may still have the potential of another melt down and this could be worse than the first.
My D2a has separate fuses for the left and right headlights so it is possible to have one headlight out and the other still working due to a blown fuse.
However fitting a higher rated fuse than is specified to ANY electrical circuit instead of finding out Why the fuse blew in the first place is just Begging for trouble.

Hi twr, first off, even if the standard globs were replaced with high wattage globs ( which the kit is designed to allow for ), the total current draw for the two high beams will be no more than 15 amps.
The driving lights are powered by a separate relay setup.
So the wiring and 30 amp fuses are more than adiquate and safe.
The fact there was a meltdown indicates a wiring “error”
Cragg, if you have the time, give me a call over the weekend, and we can check out the wiring, step by step. This needs to be sorted, to eliminate the possibility of a fire occurring.
Hi Tim,
I may give you a call during the week as am night shift atm.
I had to get it sorted partially as son was taking his car camping.
As said his car had a sort of version of your set up in it but not yours.
I have not upped the fuse amperage at all just the standard 30A fuses. The first issue I think was a relay failure but it had both spots hooked up to one side which I did change to one per side.
What I initially did was pull one of my New Era relays out of the Defender and replace the one in his (2 dual relays). When switching to high beam spot lights came on ok, pass high beam came on ok but drivers side went out. Turn off spots and high beam on drivers side would come on ok.
So to be certain removed the set up from the Defender and put in the Disco 2 and same, lose drivers high beam. Put back into Defender and ok.
Is it possible that the D2 already having a relay in place is causing an issue when another dual relay is fitted to high beam circuit? I suppose what I am asking is if the headlight upgrade is actually suitable for the D2.
I fitted 2 single relays for the spots and all is fine.
Can the dual relay be used in place of a single just for spotlights as opposed to headlight and spotlight upgrade as we couldnt get the spots to work off a dual relay on their own either.
I am assuming in this configuration:
L1 to Spot 1
L2 to Spot 2
B to Battery
S1 to switch bridged to S2
S to high beam wire and second switch wire with it?
or should both switch wires go to S1 and S2??
I need a replacement New Era Relay for the Defender as have 3 in that and have had 1 fail on one side so will get hold of you if you can supply and maybe get a couple of spares a seem to be near impossible to get off the shelf over here in the west. Not bad for about 10 years old though.
Cheers
Craig
