Question VNT/VGT - what happens when turbo to intercooler pipe is disconnected

Driving up a hill today at 80km/h when there is an awful noise (which first I assumed was the old Hilux speeding past me on the right) and loss of power. Then the EGT alarm went off with 756*C as the temperature. Managed to limp to the top and pull out of the way of traffic to find that the silicone hose connected to the turbo air outlet has popped off. A bit of road side repairs and a burnt hand and all sorted and on my way again driving as per normal.

The turbocharger is a Turbo Technics S208 VNT/VGT. When this hose popped off what would have occurred - would the turbo have overreved due to no manifold boost pressure to tell the waste gate to open or would with no boost pressure being sensed would the exhaust side stayed small and created a blockage in the exhaust system and be the cause of the high exhaust gas temperatures?

There was a slick of oil on the bottom of the turbo charger and I am wondering if any damage/additional wear may have been caused by the incident.

The cause of your high egt is because there was no boost to lean out the mixture of combustion ( rich) which in diesels causes egt to skyrocket , your turbo would have overrevved briefly but after the event it would have slowed down again as the exhaust gas flow would be reduced . shouldn't have done damage

Ah yes of course I had not considered the fuel side. As the air is metered prior to entering the turbo charger and then is being blown straight back into the atmosphere is makes complete sense that the engine would be running rich.

The exact same thing has happened to me, it never even occurred to me that it might have damaged anything, I just got a new hose clamp to keep the pipe on and off I went,

That was a year ago so I would say you would be fine

Seconded. Happens quite a lot, never heard of it causing problems. As you found, the old girl doesn't want to keep going when it comes off. LRs version of fail safe
