as some may be aware i'm looking to buy a defender (ute or trayback)
i've seen a 93 110 (Tdi) that I am half interested in (price is right)
I'll assume its a 200 tdi being a 93 (as 300tdi was intoduced in about 94)
but as I have never driven a defender older than a 1999 td5 and that was only last week
(I owned (just sold) a 300 Tdi disco and still own a old stage 1 V8 )
what would I expect to be differant in a 93 defender to a 99
are they wind down windows (or old slide type like my stage 1?)
would gearbox be LT77 or R380?
tranfer case Lt 230?
are diffs and axles the same as later ones?
did they have std power steer?
how common was a/c? (how hard to fit?)
what else is differant?
thanks in advance
jase
PS was any model defender fitted with a tachop factory?
I was amazed the 99 Td5 didn't have a tacho ??

As far as I know no defender comes with a tacho. They decided a clock was more useful.

I'd put it this way, the 93 Defender would be more similar to your Stage 1 V8.
Only thing the same as the TD5 would be the shape, i think they changed just about everything.
Cheers Baz.

There were a few changes from the county (110) to the defender 110 like the back seat, but basically, a 93 defender is the same as a 99. Different engine, but I think that's about it really.

I think this is what you want to know:
200Tdi engine with a LT77s gearbox (and LT230 transfer case)
Salisbury rear diff (same as 300Tdi, except stronger drive flanges)
A 93 may have a disc brake rear end, or the earlier drum brakes (no matter either way really)
Front CVs are the same as 110 (ie stronger than later 300Tdi)
The interior (including doors and windows) are much the same as the 99, just slightly different seats
Power steer is standard, AC was not - some had an Australian aftermarket kit. You can fit later kits, but there some fooling around with compressor mounts, hoses etc. Dash components are the same as the 300 and Td5
Defenders have never had a tacho as standard (but easy to fit)
In many ways the 200 Def was better than the later ones - stronger in the axles and drive flanges. The 200 is a good simple diesel that lasts very well (some would argue better than the 300). If the LT77 fails, a R380 can be retro fitted (with a different input shaft and bellhousing, available factory)
No Defender is remotely like your V8 Stage 1
Hope this helps.

If the 200tdi Defender is fitted with drum rear brakes (the earlier ones), it will have 10 spline front axles with weak 32 spline RTC6862 CVs (same CVs as 300tdis). The stronger 23 spline AEU2522 CVs finished well back in the pre-defender days, even some of the later 110s (pre-defender) have the weaker CVs.
If the 200tdi Defender has disc rear brakes it will have the same RTC6862 CVs, but will be better off with the stronger 24 spline front axles. These are the equal of anything on a '99 model.
Drum brake rear Defenders also had oil lubricated splines on the drive members, which was removed on the later disc brake rears. This move caused a lot of trouble with rapid wear of the splines and continued to be a problem for 300tdis.

have a look through my gallery - mines a 200Tdi Defender 1994 model has disc brake rear end. Any questions about the pics - just ask me.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".
