    RRC air suspension retrofit

    G'day Guys,

I'm going to reinstate the air suspension in my 95 RRC. The system is still there just the springs are missing and one of the ride height sensors is bent beyond repair. I plan to re-kit the compressor, valve block, clean up the internals of the ride height sensor, replace the damaged one and re-run all the pneumatic lines.

Couple of quick questions. Are the air springs in the P38 and the Classic the same? Will the P38 air springs fit into a Classic? cause I can get a full new set for about $500 bucks. I've tried to search but I get conflicting answers. All the info I can find is converting to coil springs but nothing to go back to air. There is probably for good reason for that, but good reason doesn't come into it The heart want's what the heart want's..

Also if my ECU is knackered, has anyone looked at an aftermarket controller? (but that might defeat the purpose of a retrofit)

Of course I'll have to work out why a previous owner removed the air. Has anyone gone down this road? Was it worth it? What dose a Classic ride like with air as apposed to coils?

I've only every had a Classic on coils, although the 93 Vouge SE I used to have was the best riding of all my LRs. It had blue springs maybe Dawson's and bilstien shocks. Talk about smooth . I have been in my brother in laws 2002 P38 and really wasn't impressed with it's ride, it felt quite harsh and stiff. The Disco 2 gave no problems with the rear air springs (except when I overloaded it with bricks and had you change the bags a couple of months later)

    TIA Steve

G'day Steve, you're certainly not the first to do this and a search will probably bring up some older threads that will answer most of your questions. I certainly understand the desire to get it back up and running (those buttons on the dash are taunting you), I did the same with a 94 soft dash although with that vehicle everything but the springs was present, albeit needing overhaul.
The reason so many EAS systems were removed is that a small leak causes the compressor to be overworked, leading to a downward spiral of suspension problems. Even when everything is right, they will go into failure mode occasionally and can be frustrating. There was a bloke by the name of Storey Wilson offering an aftermarket tool specifically for resetting the EAS when it went into limp mode- a must-have if you do the refit.
p38 springs won't fit. I don't expect it will be easy to find the missing parts as they are getting a bit old now.
There are aftermarket control systems that are probably better than the original but perhaps not what you're after. Have a look at the Airbagman website.
I found that the ride once I had refitted the EAS was harsh. I did not go to the extent of acquiring the correctly valved shocks (they are specific to EAS) so don't know how much difference they would have made.

    Thanks POD

    Thanks POD,

That's exactly the info I needed. I was so chuffed with the way my old RRC 93 rode I don't want to risk ruining the ride of the 95 until I can compare Coils vs Air in a Classic. I hope I can find someone up here with the air suspension still working who can take me for a quick ride.

I'll put that project on the back burner and concentrate on finishing the paint job and get her back on the road. You're right those 3 buttons on that lovely soft dash are taunting me .

    Thanks again Steve.

    Hi Steve,
I believe the origonal Dunlop air springs are still available, probably from UK. Also Airbag Man in Bris has, or had, Arnold air springs. These are also available from the USA. Some suppliers and work shops are still able to get them, I know Graeme Cooper Automotive in Sydney has just rebuilt the air suspension in a beautiful 95 Classic. They also look after mine. If you lived closer you would be welcome to have a run in mine.
    Cheers,
    Phil

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that the EAS system is not as luxo-barge feeling as the coily thingies.

I was corrupted by an '89 model on worn out standard springs/Pirelli Scorpion tyres, supposed to be the near-perfect tyre for Rovers...

My '95 Softdash is, in this department, a bit of a disappointment... maybe it's the Arnotts air springs with the (designed) firmer ride at Normal and Highway Height (softer at OffRoad & Extended) is responsible.

As long as the variable resistor part of the height sensor is working smoothly , then straightening the arm is the least of your worries... the pump and valve body will absorb mo$t of your dollar$.
Bladders are best sourced from the UK, and there are folk here who have had success in using the REAR (longer) ones on both ends.
Yes, the Dampers for AIR suspension are indeed different from the coily/springy ones, so more expen$e

However, when all is Said & Done, there is a unique 'WOW' factor in having 3 Little Buttons that actually work...

Or you could replace them with something else... stay with fixed length and softer riding springs. LOTS cheaper, zero maintenance, Reliable and nicer ride.

The only thing you miss out on is Auto levelling.. but little round air-balls in the rear springs will fix that.

The Lady Sarah, '95 softdash Vogue SE with working EAS
(just don't mention the BW transfer case...)
