    Angry Can't get it started!

    Hi All.

I have a 96 Disco with 300 tdi. Have just replaced the turbo with VNT model, new Allisport Intercooler and just for good measure a new injection pump. The engine was rebuilt not long ago but the guys who tuned it said I won't see any improvement until I look at the FIP. Old one had 310K on it. Anyway, I have replaced all these bits and now can't get her started. Figured i had messed up pump timing so went back to basics and pulled off timing cover, locked in the flywheel, lined up all the marks, set the pump with a pin and still no joy. Was all running fine, apart from lacking power and using too much fuel, with the old pump so I expected it to fire up with a new one. I have cracked the unions and have fuel at the injectors so I am now thinking i need to fine tune the pump timing to get it fired up. Am i on the right track? Appreciate any tips. Most frustrating as after the rebuild it started as soon as I got fuel to it but this time round does not want to play. Cheers Shaun

No expert, but it seems to me that, if you have it timed OK, it may still need bleeding. Will it start on ether ( Aerostart )? Mine was a bugger to start until I got it bled properly, and I hadn't had the pump off, just the lines and injectors.

    check the pump phasing.

open the injectors and turn the engine over slowly by hand with the throttle pinned and the igntion on.

follow the rule of 5 to work out what injector should be injecting (if 1 is rocking 4 should be firing)

its possible to build the pump 90,180 and 270 degrees out of phase.

there is also a way to put the injector pipes on so the firing sequence is wrong.

for bold timing and phasing, injection should occur between the point the inlet valve on the cylinder going onto the rock begins to open and TDC. If your injector union starts to dribble in that range of crank movement you're close enough for it to start and run,

I have also seen the pump phasing out too. On a locally built pump....😕

    Hi Guys

appreciate the responses. I will try all those suggestions. Was not aware of pump phasing so thanks for the lesson on that. Back in the shed in a couple of days and will have another crack. cheers Shaun

If the phasing is out, would there be unburnt fuel evident at the exhaust? I would assume so, but I've never seen an out of phase pump.
