Bit of grease or wd-40 on all the universals I believe usually fixes that problem.
Matt.
My Rangie has developed a squaeky/screechy steering wheel when turning. It''s not the pump or anything but totally sounds like the wheel itself (or the boss or the column or somehting).
Steering itself is fine and the sound occurs as turning the wheel, not when still on full lock or anything like that.
Anyone come across this and more importantly can anyone suggest a fix ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Might be the contacts for the horn etc, is yours wheel mounted or stalk?
Mice?
Schroedinger's cat?
If you had a Disco 1 I would say it was the rubber seal on the firewall where the steering shaft passes from the cabin to the engine bay. The rubber seal is a tight fit around the shaft and as it ages or gets cold it slightly binds on the shaft, just enough to cause an annoying squeaking (more like a banshee) sound that sounds as if it is coming out the steering wheel boss. Getting under the dash near the pedals and prising the rubber seal away from the shaft and giving it a squirt with some sort of lubricant fixes it.
How do I know - mine has been annoyed me for about 4 years and I finally fixed it on Sunday.
I assume the steering shaft through the firewall arrangement on your rangie is basically the same as the disco.

I too have had that problem on my 94 update hybrid disco it certainly
took a lot of time to find out it was the rubber as you described, once fixed it hasn't happened again, but have since had a noise when turning the wheel but it turned out to be a broken tape in the rotary coupler.

I do not know what it could be.
Does it squeak when you take the steering wheel off
Thanks!! You saved me from pulling the steering wheel of my D2 to find a squeal that developed after a trip away last weekend. I suspected the rotary coupling until I reading this. A small dob of rubber grease on the rubber boot and the squeal is gone! Job done in a couple of minutes.
I love this forum for tips like this! (Even 5 year old tips!)
