not much go

Hi, my alex from mornington in vic, just bought my 1st discovery a 95 tdi for the bargain $9600 from wholeseller , but I brought this because the pre owner had the motor and radiator done and spending $7800 :-) good4me ! ,but now 4 days old after the car has been running great ,last night on the way home from the city , she wouldn't rev past 2000 and that took a long time to get there , but the gears kept changing up evening to 1st gear and this was fun going up hill , well the first thing I was thinking was the turbo gone ,thinking of low rev's,but took of air hose ,put finger in and found that fan was spining freely, now thinking auto trans just about to go because motor revs past 2000 when it's not moving , so when I put in gear and it moves forward at 250 revs then you take less pressure of your foot ,then it go's into second ,but not much speed happening, foot of more 3nd then 4 ,but not really going anywhere...
well what do u think it couldbe the trans all something else ?

lack of power

As you can see I'm a fellow 95 Tdi owner: I've had my share of interesting things happen.

The previous owner's handiwork may not have been finished off properly or they found somthing that caused them to sell it quickly. That's how I got mine, and after some basic work now it runs like a swiss watch (sort of).

Figure out if your problem is engine or trans. In my case it was the engine, and one of the things that screw up the engine can be the timing. This is one of the things you willhave to investigate anyway. Spend $100 and get a Land Rover knowledgeable mechanic to remove the front crank pulley, remove the timing belt cover and inspect the timing belt, pulleys, and crank gears and woodruff keys (things that hold the gear on the crank nose). If the woodruff keys are worn, they allow the gear to move and alter the timing. If the frontpulley isnt torqued properly, it will flop around as well, causing damage.

I'm not sure if you have Electronic Diesel Control - since yours is an auto, that also could cause the lack of power.

Explore your car, get a copy of RAVE disks ( electronic manuals) and you'll get your Disco running Ok in no time.

ps TDi's are not V8's - they drive differently. It takes time to get used to it. ( I miss my Rangie too)

At the risk of saying the same thing for all TDI's, it sounds like the boost pressure to the compensator could be the problem.
Revs OK out of gear, but not under load. Needs more fuel?
Boost hose to compensator popped off?
Something not fitted properly after the rebuild?

if its has been standing for any time there may be a build up of slime in the fuel - replace fuel filter and put heaps of fual addative in with some fresh fuel.

I bought a car that had been sitting for 3 months and was told the injection pump was stuffed and would now rev out under load - knocked $3k off the selling price, got a new fuel filter went like a rocket.

I hope you didnt buy that tdi auto of ebay that started at $9000, it had done 344,000 k's and nothing else of the running gear has been recoed - including the ZF auto ! I would start budgeting for a $2000- $2500 reco on it within 6 months.

Glad its fixed Alex. Maybe the fuel pump replacement was overkill the diaphragm may have been shot but fixed now.

I notice that you enquired about the RAVE manual elswhere so I guess you are preparing to role up your sleeves and do some of the work yourself. The 95 Tdi is a relatively simple vehicle to work on and parts are cheapish if you shop around. And there is plenty of good advice available here. Good Land Rovering.
