................... & the Series 3 stick has a nylon bush on the ball so that could be missing/worn etc. Apx. $15 from 4WDs in Melbourne.
The sloppiness could be simply weak detent springs (apx $3 each & there are 3 of those.
Also the 2 springs for the reversing gate could be weak or missing. Easy to do. (apx. $3 each)
Tight steering could also be down to a semi-seized steering relay (apx. $150) or seized tie rod ends (apx. $20 each) & there are a total of 6 including 2 under the battery box on the Longitudinal Steering Tube.
All the above are a piece of cake to replace with maybe the exception being the Relay, which could be rusted in, although in my case it lifted straight out.
Good luck with your decision.

I don't think it sounds as bad as some of the guys are saying (read 'bad' as 'expensive').
The steering may be over adjusted on the steering box. Remove the little protection plate that's in the RHS front guard and you can adjust the tension. Make sure the steering box is lubricated of course and check for other obvious problems (damaged steering rods, tie rods, steering damper etc). I recommend Penrites fluid grease for the s/box.
I may have a spare steering box cheap in my shed if you decide you need one. Also steering rods.
Whatever the sloppines in the gearbox selector is, it will be a DIY repair under $50.
Fuel economy is between 4-6 km per litre.
Payload is much higher than any book or placard will dare say.
Good luck
